A lot of people mentioned here aren't my cup of tea (I am using that phrase so you will know how incredibly old I am), but it seems more likely to me that they are talented and also not my thing. It's weird that people are assuming that millions of fans are wrong and they're the only one with real taste.

You got this so wrong. Olivia Rodrigo heavily sampled (aka stole) from Paramore, a band that was popular when the 30-somethings were in high school. She had to retroactively add them to the song credits because of it. So, nobody was saying they’ve loved her forever. If anything, it was more of a “WTF, Olivia, that’s Hayley’s song.”

12-22 year olds are a HUGE target audience for pop music. And their life experience is driven in so many ways by intense (and confusing) emotions. Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift are truly gifted at tapping into that - crafting stories and phrases that resonate with many.

Reminds me in some ways of the Cure, Depeche Mode, and similar bands back in my day. And EMO rock in the 80s. It's less about the musicality than the feelings. The insecure, brooding, mercurial, itensity of teens and young adults.

I meant EMO rock in the 90s and 00s. Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy etc.
