Has less to do with who coaches and more to do with who will be the regional director for a combined DC/VA/MD team. As someone previously noted, there is a direct correlation to player selections and the regional directors across all regions. You can expect at least half of the team to be associated with the regional directors club. This is what hurt the DC/VA team last year; not all of the best talent participated in the process. Coaching is a convenient excuse. AS is a "baked" money grab to help promote specific clubs.

Definitely NOT a resume builder. Actually screams desperation. Save your money and attend camps at the top schools you’re interested in.

20 players paying $750 per, they make $15,000 per team. I don't see why they don't take everyone they can.
Coaches and refs cost probably about $500-$600 per game for AS (two teams, two refs). 4-5 games, means each teams costs them less then $2500 in expenses, plus facility rental, trainers, insurance, t-shirts, etc. I would bet they net out at least $7500 per team.
Even with just 4 teams per region, that's $30k per region that AS pockets.
So, yes, it's a money grab.

It is probably a money grab, but if you think your kid will enjoy it and you can afford to do it, then fine. If you are doing it in hopes of getting a scholarship, you are not going to get much ROI.

I know everyone thinks UA is super political, and I don't discount that, but you're right at least once you tryout and make the team, there's nothing else to pay. What could AS possibly offer that's more attractive than UA to justify the extra $750?? I really their customer base will pay it.

If you didn't think American Select was a money grab before, you will now. Long Island is having THREE teams. I know for at least the 2026 class there are three teams. So I'm assuming they'll have 3 for each year. What a joke.

When you look at last year's AS rosters it's easy to see they aligned with whomever the director was for that region. CT definitely took the cake with 20 of 22 players making the team for their 2023 class. Almost every team was made up of 50% of players from the regional director's club.
Lesson learned, if you are a club director you better fight to wear the crown of AS regional director. It seems to be a ticket to stack the regional team with your club players. If you are a parent or player, make sure you know who the regional director is for your area before spending all that money. If it is your club director, you may as well tryout. Good chance you will make the team. If your club director is not the AS regional director, you need to decide if you will play the longer odds. And more than likely lose out on your investment.
I think parents/players were already aware of this in the DC/VA region, so many top players didn't bother trying out. While AS claimed they would be different than UA when it came to selecting teams, no one was foolish enough to believe this. And the final rosters proved this. This was the main complaint about the UA team that was made up of primarily VAM players. The DC/VA AS team was not different. These teams had good players. The problem is they did not have all of the best players in the area. Thus, could not compete against the better teams.
Yea but VAM sucks unless they’re playing in the crab cake or the aloha tournaments. Then watch out.
