If we're going to spend all that money on special programs, they should be making every effort to ensure those programs are being accessed by the students who would most benefit from them.


How would they determine that? Tests, applications? Teachers' recommendations are subjective, as are parents'. I don't think you would narrow down the applicant pool that much, so how do you choose if not lottery?

Basically if you turn down HB, you will rue the day forever. This is like winning the real lottery. Don't squander it.

Another HB parent - and I completely agree with PP - my then 5th grader did not want to leave her friends either, but really opened up to the possibility after visiting because she had such a positive experience. She is now in 7th and loves HB.

Charter schools? No thank you don’t squander public money or more boutique hard to get in schools. And illegal in VA for now.

Schools that charge? That’s a private school.

I don’t know everything about this, but I think the root of the problem lies with the county board. They never fully fund the schools. Maybe the school board doesn’t always allocate the funds perfectly but it’s not like there are enough budget items they could cut to find the money for as many schools as are needed.

Sorry, there are multiple anti HBW PPs. I plan to start a campaign with SB to turn it into a high school only program. PP was someone else.

Start your own thread, will you? We get it, you are mad the school exists and you are probably mad your kid didn’t get in (and you would have happily sent them if they had.). But it does exist and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so your comments are not relevant to kids/parents who are trying to decide what to do in the next few weeks.

My kid did this day and I wouldn't recommend shortening it. Your kid is walking around the school with other kids who are thinking about going to the school next year, as well as with their guides, current sixth graders. It seems like a fun day for the visiting kids, and if your kid is really considering going, you might want to let them do the whole thing in case they make a friend or two.
