I like to make a rice pudding for breakfast with sweet potatoes and cinnamon, sweetened with maple syrup. If I'm on my period it's the perfect breakfast lol, which the addition of some brown sugar.

Overnight oats are great too, I always heat mine up in the morning.

Yum, I love this, too!

I cook rolled oats about 6 days a week. I use 1/4 cup of milk, 1/4 tsp of sugar and add a ton of fresh berries. I never get tired of it (although apparently this is junk food if I don't take the time to cook steel cut?)

I did cooked farro in the slow cooker overnight and it was pretty good. I add water plus apples, cinnamon, and vanilla and let it cook overnight. I've done it with Quaker old fashioned oats, but it cooks a little too long. It works with steel cut oats or wheat berries.
Mostly I like waking up to the nice smell and something warm to eat.

I know you said hot, but I love cooked farro after it’s cooled. I eat it with cold milk like any other breakfast cereal and it’s got a lovely flavor.

For health? Steel cut oats. For taste? Lashings of Lyle’s Golden Syrup.

Not sure about health value but wheat berries are my favorite.

Whole buckwheat or ground?

probably the least healthy option, but at least it's high in iron. Oatmeal, especially steel cut, is healthier on all counts. Basically any whole grain cereal, OP.

What difference does it make in how it’s cut?

I think it's steamed before they roll it for rolled oats, so there's additional processing there.

Oatmeal is not cereal

Oatmeal is the most common "hot cereal" which is what OP asked about.

There was another thread on this if you are >30 you think it’s cereal, < 30 you do not.

Whether or not it's "cereal" it's definitely "hot cereal". Otherwise, what would hot cereal be? Fruit loops with siracha?

Are there really people who don't think of oatmeal as cereal, but do think of hot quinoa or grits or cream of wheat as cereal? I have trouble believing that.

Yeah, this needs more explanation... If you are under 30, what food category would you put oatmeal and cream of wheat in?

Well I agree that that needs explanation but the "oatmeal is not cereal" poster didn't object to grits or cream of wheat as cereal. So, how do they justify those two as cereal and not oatmeal? I think that people under 30 don't think of oatmeal as cereal don't think of the other two as cereal either.

I'm 39, I wouldn't call any of these cereal.

What would you put in the “hot cereal” category of not those 3 things?

None, I haven't heard the term "hot cereal" before this thread. If I were offering them, they'd all be separate terms. "We have cereal, fruit, I could make some waffles, grits, or oatmeal..."

I do a mix. Best recipe I’ve found is 1/2 steel cut, 1/2 cup rolled oat cooked in 3 cups liquid (I use 1 cup milk, 2 cups water), 1/4 t salt. Makes 3 servings.
