We're not eating in due to covid and still tip on carry out. But we only get carry out a couple times a month anyhow, so not a big deal to pay a little more.

This is where i am. I didn't know to tip on takeout until after college when one of my coworkers at a low wage nonprofit who was also a server told me people should because packing up takeout takes servers away from table service. Same people, same wage. I tipped 10% until the pandemic, now I dine out much less so I've increased my tips.

No, that's not most of it, we only buy one meat item a week and our bill has gone up from about $90-100 at Aldi at the start of the pandemic to $130-150. We are buying a little more as our kids get older and eat more but not 50% more. That's called inflation.

But yes, if you can't tip on takeout, cook your own meals.

I can definitely tip but I choose not too. Do I still have to cook my own meals? I rather not. Lol

Look at the threads here discussing a $15 minimum wage. Plenty of people saying the cost of meals were rise, and plenty of people responding "it’s worth it" and "it’s only a few $".

Yet here we are on page 5 of "it’s too much"

I asked about this on the WaPo restaurant live chat many years ago and Sietsema recommended 10% for takeout so that’s what I do.

Lots of people are doing take-out now, and servers are often the ones packing up the take-out orders. Servers make an hourly rate of $4 an hour; they really count on tips. Your cheaping out hurts them. These are people trying to make a living and everything has gotten more expensive for them too. Would the extra $10 bucks really hurt you?

If you are concerned about a fair wage stop tipping, it should be in the restaurants managers to reward employee performance not the patrons

Worked in DC restaurants 15+ years. The person packing your take out food is a tipped employee making tipped minimum wage usually. You don't need to leave 20% (10% is appropriate) because you're not getting full table service. However, someone needs to fetch your items from different places (the line, salad fridge, sauce area, etc,) bag it, ensure all appropriate sauces/dressings/bread) are included and double check the ticket. The hourly kitchen employees are NOT responsible for this work, the tipped employees are, so they should be tipped.

I’m cooking a LOT more. My pay has actually gone down, not up. I can’t keep up with inflation.

So - how much are you supposed to tip for carry out? The same amount as if you sat down and had service or had it delivered? That seems really illogical

Never tip on carry out. Tipping is for table service.

If you can’t tip on table service, stay home.
