Cabinet= most expensive expense (also the market is short of glass doors)
Quartz countertop = go to dulles airport stone shops and you can buy and select the pattern yourself to save money. Granite is out of date and you'd better use everything quartz.
Quartz is the laminate of the future.

Anonymous wrote:OP here - our's is a mid size kitchen - about 14x16'. the breakdown of costs is roughly -
Cabinets - painted/glazed - $60K
Granite counters - $9K
Labor & materials including wood flooring - $60K
The part I'm really struggling with is the cabinet cost.

Who will even take a small job like mine? All recommendations appreciated!
Check with a place like Cabinet Discounters. They might be able to recommend a contractor who works with them.

Two years ago we modeled our kitchen- full gut, DR wall removal, added a pantry, island, etc. I found an Amish cabinetmaker in Ohio who hand built our new maple cabinets, pantry, etc. working from drawings I paid a local design service $200. The carpenter who installed the cabinets said that these cabinets were the first he had ever installed that did not require any shim. Out the door with shipping (the cabinet shop delivered and unloaded them for us) cost just over $19k.
Holy cats, not you again. Please, at this point just shut up with posting about your cheap Amish cabinet maker in Ohio until you’re fricking willing to cough up a bloody name.

$15,000 - plywood base cabinets with all wood front doors custom painted
$7,500 - Quartz counters and backsplash (the quartz goes 18" up the wall)
$7,000 - appliances (some of which were bought pre-covid and I noticed that they've gone up. For instance our panel ready dishwasher was $700 but now $950)
$3,500 - designer fee
$45k - labor and some additional supplies like a new window
So, yes. It sounds like the estimates you got are to be expected and that's probably for a basic kitchen not a high end one.
here's a helpful blog post from 2018 from a designer in Arizona where presumably labor is slightly less expensive than here.
Curious what designer you used? I'm having trouble finding one who won't turn our kitchen into something worthy of a Downton Abbey set. We will be doing something quite similar; did the designer and the contractor already know each other? Or did you find them separately? Thanks!

We moved everything aroound, so new gas lines, electric, plumbing, overhead range ventilation that is flush with the ceiling. Top of the line appliances including two beverage fridges, custom cabinets, two dishwashers, two islands, brand new pantry, bar area, new floors. Hired a high-end kitchen designer and used their contractor. Labor was $55K. Total came in at $200K, but that also included refinishing all the wood floors on our entire first floor and painting the entire first floor.
It's spectacular. Good luck - everything is much more expensive now and hard to find good people to do the work. They're all swampped with work.
Better be spectacular. For $200k, I could build you a 3br cape cod. Can’t believe how much people around here pay for just a kitchen.
Not around here you couldn't. I just got quoted $1Mil. to build a 4 BR home on modest lot.
