It is actually the least-entitled kids who are hurt the most by this decision. There are a lot of kids in this county who rely on APS extracurricular activities to build their resume for college applications and career opportunities. And maybe two weeks doesn't seem like a big deal, but many MS and HS activities are seasonal and 2 weeks is huge for kids preparing for winter competitions-- and not just sports, but also things like robotics and STEM team competitions, Model United Nations, etc. Many of these activities don't carry any more risk than kids being in the classroom. The decision to cancel everything across the board is arbitrary and lazy, and certainly not based on science.
Funny then that only the entitled rich parents are complaining.

If APS had shut down activities based on some sort of risk stratification, I might have been okay with the decision. But Duran is treating all activities as equal risk. That is not based on any science. This is a knee jerk reaction that sends a message to our students that their hobbies and extracurricular interests aren’t important— or at least not as important as letting adults hang out in the bars in Clarendon, or at the gym, or in restaurants, or at the bazillion other places where people are unmasked and the science tells us are actually contributing to the spread of COVID.

Do you remember March 2020 when school closed for two weeks?
Two weeks with no sports isn’t two weeks with schools closed, idiot.
It's not nice to call names, but the point is that "two weeks" may not actually mean two weeks. In the last case, "two weeks" meant an entire year. Even Duran said all that happens in two weeks is that they "evaluate." Do you think this latest surge will be done by then? So how long are we going to cancel everything extra for kids?
