Just because you find something “stupid,” that certainly doesn’t make it objectively true. What individuals find enjoyable is subjective, and your opinion, while noted, is incredibly mean-spirited and unhelpful, especially coming off the heels of this disheartening experience for a child, and at this time of year no less. Hobbies are for enjoyment, “productive” or not (again, subjective). And games - video or otherwise - are perfectly fine ways for children and adults alike to invest in, pass the time, and merely take pleasure in. Games can also be a great way to learn/improve problem solving, strategizing, and other useful skills.

Being scammed sucks on its own. You don’t have to be an asshole and pile on to this mother and, by extension, her child.

I’m sorry this happened to your son OP. Do keep trying with the suggestions posted here. And there’s always a lesson to be learned going forward once the initial sting and sorrow your son is experiencing has passed.

This is OP again. I have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to Emily's daughter.

The kindness your daughter showed him has been a balm. He has been feeling violated and upset, and it was amazing and reassuring to have a complete stranger offer to help. It's reminded him that there are many, many good and caring people out there. The fact that it happened to her, too, is taking some of the sting out of the experience.

Emily, you've got a very special girl with a big heart!

We have a fairly lenient policy on allowances and let our kids spend money on other games, but not on Roblox because there are so many issues with scams and hacks in that game, not to mention Roblox’s shady practice of not reviewing user created items for trademark violations before allowing them to be posted in the store, and then later pulling the items from everyone once they discover the IP violation without reimbursing kids who spent Robux on the item in the meantime, in our view, it’s an opportunity to teach our kids that while it’s fine to spend extra money on frivolous items, you should look into what you’re spending your money on so you don’t waste it.
