My dd is at Columbia. She was told that she was not allowed to go to Morningside Park, or anywhere north of campus. One day, she sent me a video of her and friends at MP, just to taunt me. I immediately told her that the next tuition check would not go out until she promised me to never go again, AND we track her every move. That was two weeks ago, now she is suddenly very quiet. I have heard that other Columbia parents are now giving their kids threatening warnings.
The school is wonderful (in a NY kind of way). Intellectually challenging, and so on. However, the students can't have it all. You get to be a world renowned institution, but shucks, you can't be out late, and part of NY is off limits, darn the hardship. I believe that the young man who was killed was playing soccer way up at Baker. You can't be up at Baker playing soccer at night! The school needs to shut down activities at dark, or provide transportation back to campus.
I wish that C could round up their properties to make it more of a one campus feel. C is not as spread out as NYU, but still...maybe they could buy a sliver of MP, don't know. Sad all around, talented young man taken away from us.

I don’t believe this is a Columbia issue. At least 2 NYU students have died recently. If not on or near the campus, while vacationing in Hampton, or back home in Texas.

What are you babbling on about? It’s quite easy to cross the street if you perceive a threat coming your way. Have you ever been to NYC? No? Then StFU.

Manhattan is still very safe, and much safer than DC. But the area near NYU on Sixth Avenue, just south of Trader Joe’s, looks like trash, and way worse than most of the area around Columbia. I’d be more nervous about hanging out around NYU than around Columbia.

What a tragic waste. Shame on the system that let that monster back into the community.

Sounds like I’m blaming the victims (May they rest in peace). I’m not, just supporting others who say that some students new to NYC may be incredibly brilliant, but not street smart.

It sounds like you’re blaming the victim because you are. The foundational point is that citizens should have the right to live in an environment where they aren’t at risk of being murdered by a violent, lifelong criminal who was constantly let back on the street through a revolving door justice system system that failed all of us.
