Just got a $100 gift basket of pears. They tasted no different from the pears at Whole Foods.

Hale Orchards. I order from them each year for gifts for three different households. The quality is fantastic and I think their pricing is also the most reasonable I found.

Just thought of this DCUM post when I saw Ina post about her favorite citrus delivery.

Even though oranges were a Christmas tradition back when they were a luxury, nowadays... not so much.

Fresh citrus shipped from Florida right after it’s picked is far superior to what you get at the store.

I highly doubt it. Logistics are so efficient these days.

I doubt there's even a difference between the oranges. It's not like many of the regular old ones you find in the grocery store aren't from Florida too. I imagine they just sell some of them to suckers who convince themselves they taste a difference because they paid 10 times as much.

Look I don't work for the Orange Council or anything but when we have gotten oranges shipped directly from Florida they are noticeably better. And I never buy them- they are gifts so you can't say the markup impressed me.

So I decided to look on Instacart to see where the oranges at my local stores were from. And the origins varied- some were from the US- mostly California. But the others were from Mexico, Brazil and South Africa. Those places are much further so they can't ripen on the tree as long. Maybe just check facts before spouting off.

If you want the best, order from the Tangerine Man in Ojai, CA. You won't get them on Christmas, but the kishu tangerines are highly sought after and delicious. The other Pixie tangerines are delicious too, but the kishu are a favorite of Alice Waters. I've had them and they are amazing.

Where do you live? Oranges dont grow around here...

Yet they are available at WF and Balducci's...
