Enlisted/20 years get around $1K a month. $8K would be fantastic. Only high level officers get that much. You clearly don't get the difference from enlisted and officers and 20 vs. 30 years. You get a pension off your salary which doesn't include the housing and other allowances so its very low.
He doesn't have a little job. He has a real job that he does very well with. It wasn't worth staying in the military longer.
Considering how much my H gets in retirement it did not make sense to stay. He was not military.

It was weird watching her lie about being bored becaude she retired and she lied about how she fills her day. Either discuss work or do don't. Its weird to pretend she is bored at home....why tell HALF a story?

I worked at a university-- it wasn't unusual for people to technically "retire" then come back and work hourly. I'm not sure if it's FT, but I consider them retired. I'm not sure what the reasoning for the change was, except they hit some magic number in pension/savings that made retiring a better option financially and personally.
When you no longer contribute to an employer retirement plan, or you take a pension, etc. it's retirement whether you're working or not.

Was she a government employee? Just like the PP who had husband in military, if you are in government and stay 20+ years 30-35 years for full benefits when you “retire”. She would then be considered retired from the government.

People are weird about retirement. Some people make a big deal of it and are obsessed with “retiring early” while others hate the thought of it and will work as long as they can.
Maybe she feels like she should be retired and doesn’t like admitting she has to work? Does she have a somewhat impressive job now? If so, I’m not sure why she would be at all embarrassed. If she’s bagging groceries and doesn’t want to be maybe she is.

Because she has some reason she feels it is important to keep it private. I'm wondering why you as her sister approach this as "it's weird" rather than discussing it with her with compassion and curiosity.

But then you admit he is not retired since he has a "real job".
He is both. He IS retired from the military and he has a real job. Most military retirees go on to have a second career. Military retirement is not enough to actually retire on. But, he did 20 years, retired per military rules and moved on. That is retirement. We have full retirement benefits.

Older person ‘retired’ is a lifestyle that indicates the person no longer needs to work.
It’s two entirely different things.
OP sister is retired. Retired lifestyle is something different. We are talking about her retiring from a job.
Depends on the job and post exit benefits and the circumstances of the departure. If ops sister was let go without benefits, she absolutely did not ‘retire’. If she hit a milestone that allowed her to maintain/established some type benefits, then she ‘retired’.
