I was just telling my kid today about how I regretted panicking my senior year and stopping my applications to reach schools. I ended up not applying to NYU, Brown and 2 others, though I can’t remember which ones now.

I applied to and was accepted at:

UNC Chapel Hill
University of Pittsburgh
UMass Amherst
Tufts
GWU

Ended up at GWU with significant aid. Neither of my parents graduate HS so it was a big deal for me.

I don’t remember my score and stats. I think 1400 on SATs and a very high weighted gpa at least.

1400 SAT - perfect verbal but mediocre math.
Leadership roles in 4-H, scouts, church, and an unusual volunteer activity with disabled kids.

Accepted to all the UCs (in state), waitlisted at Stanford, rejected at Pomona. Attended a middling UC because of their honors program and scholarship money.

I applied for fall 2001. 1590 SAT, A or A- average at an elite boarding school. No hooks.

My California public HS class in early 1990s had bunch of kids accepted at Stanford. It was much, much easier to get into back then. Easier than Harvard and similar.
