My boss’s wife is a version of this. He is a high earner, they live in an exclusive area, the kids go to private school. She is a SAHM, Ivy educated, very vocal progressive. She is sophisticated enough to not disparage undesirable kids and families, but she does spend the majority of her time socially engineering the lives of her children to ensure that they are socializing and forming connections with targeted families. She is currently encouraging her middle school daughter to apply to several exclusive boarding schools because, and I quote “it will enable her to have access to a pool of the most eligible men”.

Wow that is sexist. In my circle the men are equally or more sensitive to stuff like this than women. My wife is not as bad as the OP's wife, but I do occasionally see these traits myself.

She sounds awful. The one job as a parent is to teach your children to be kind to others and as inclusive as possible. She sounds like an awful person and a bad influence on your children.

Nah. They definitely exist. They're tedious and annoying af though. They manufacture drama because they are boring people and incapable of directing their time and efforts to more worthy causes.

OP, have a serious discussion with your wife. Her behavior is petty and nasty. It's extremely unbecoming. Your children will emulate it.

I really think your wife needs to be taken down a peg. She should go back to work. Perhaps she should also see a therapist over this obsession.

If she ever makes more nasty comments like that in public I would humiliate her publicly by apologizing for her horrendous behavior. She's being a B-.

Sadly, this is what a lot of parents I know are like. (Mostly moms, but also a lot of the dads.). It's anxiety and boredom, but also social climbing. You need to be frank with her, maybe underscore the qualities you *do* like about her, and encourage whatever those qualities are/were. I really hate it when parents get like this.

Sure 28 and Sudley road suck. But have you been to Old Town/Historic Dustrict. There are many lovely Antebellum homes. But sure enjoy your McMansion on a postage stamp. Or one of those town houses with no parking maybe?
