I very specifically do not ask people about their jobs. No one asks about mine, either. I prefer it that way.

My MIL has never once asked me about work. But then she has never worked a day in her life. She can't relate.

I love hearing about my friend's jobs and I have some stories of my own that are WAY out of the norm compared to any paper pusher that people tend to take great interest in (think: "I've only seen those things in movies!") I also wouldn't care to not be asked about my job at all by a SAHM so OP should get over that, but I do have a group of WOH moms I am friends with and we definitely discuss work. They're invaluable to me even if in different fields.

Huh, I am a SAHM and always thought it was rude to ask someone about their job. I never ask, ever.

In broad strokes what they do may be interesting, but the day-to-day details often are not.

I don't tend to ask friends about jobs unless it's something have brought up before. For Example, I'' ask how a new job is going, if they got the promotion they were up for if the jerk coworker was fired. I just don't talk about work to talk about work.

I am not a career SAHM but don’t work right now and my interest in other people’s work has plummeted.
A good friend of mine is getting settled at a new job and that’s all she can talk about. I go along but I would rather discuss the kids!

Same. I absolutely love what I do, but let’s be honest at some point we all stop listening when someone is describing their job unless they are putting in a show. Eyes glaze over.

How good of friends are you? How often do you talk, and for how long? Does your job really have interesting twists in it, or is it pretty much the same day to day?

Do you bring up your job yourself? I have an acquaintance who I know if I ask about her job, I’ll get my ear talked off for an hour with details I really don’t care about.

Also with most of my friends, there is enough to talk about with stuff we actually have in common that it would probably take a long conversation to finally get around to “how’s work?”

Say it again for the people in the back! I actually find it's boring talking about work even to people in the same field.

I lost my job last spring and i most of my friends and family don’t even know! And I’m very social. People don’t talk about work.
