I think every GK has been through that at some point. PKs are 80/20 with the kicker having much greater chances of scoring than being stopped.

He’s always been willing to get dirty and dive. He plays catcher in baseball. He kind of likes doing the job that’s uncomfortable or that other people don’t want to do, takes a little pride in it.

Always remind your GK, the other parents and the coach that everyone else failed at their job if the ball ever gets to the GK.

Every goal scored on you is going to feel like you made a mistake. Sometimes you did, sometimes you didn’t. Every single GK gets scored on, a lot, get used to brushing it off. Stand up and get ready for the next play because it does you no good to dwell on the past during the game. You can work on holes in your GK technique later outside of games. And like PPs said, it’s a team sport and when a goal gets scored it’s because of multiple failures not just the GK missing a save.

We have told this to ours. Wish more parents heard this We also have seen that as got further in this season the other boys on team seemed to move more to mindset of goals happen because of team and not just goalie, but still many sideline parents just blame the goalie alone and see only a missed save and not any missed plays that brought the ball to the goal to begin with.

Parents aside, the harder is definitely when a missed save is the missed play alone. When that happens, have tried to compare to a striker missing the easy shot— that sometimes it just happens. Any other good things you or coaches have said to your younger GKs? Ours has first ever tournament coming up and for first time he says nervous that everyone could be mad at him.
