Hire a nanny you trust and then trust her to use her judgement. Banning her from using a phone at all, ever, seems insane. If you hire someone who is scrolling social media for hours, then fire her, but you sound awful.
No, not when the baby is awake. She’ll have full breaks when he’s asleep as she’ll have no “chores”. She can pull up the weather, etc on her watch.
I assure you I am not awful. I’m simply not addicted to my phone.
How will you ensure she gets scheduled breaks when she can return a call from the doctor of call her own child’s school? If your baby is having a rough day and won’t nap, will you or your partner stay home to ensure your nanny gets the requisite breaks?

-Weather
-Craft instructions
-Arranging playdates
-Keeping parents updated
I had a job that said NO phone use in my contract and happily respected it. One day, the mom came FLYING in the door SCREAMING at me because there had been a family emergency and she had been trying to reach me all morning. She needed the kids packed so she could leave town with them immediately and my phone was away in my purse per my contract.
In another position, a child choked. She was having pretzels like she had been eating for years, but she laughed and snorted one that got lodged in her throat. She was making absolutely no noise and her lips were turning blue. I will never ever forget the look of shear panic on her face. I was so incredibly thankful that my phone was in my back pocket and I was able to dial 911 quickly while doing the Heimlich. I absolutely did not have spare seconds to go search for my phone.

OP, I'm with you. We've always hired older nannies for this very reason. I cannot handle young kids always on their phones never paying attention to or engaged with kids. I used to see it all the time with nannies at parks and playgrounds. Parents never have a clue and always told me how great their nannies were. Yup.
My advice is to hire an older nanny who may not be as addicted to social media/apps all day (or whose greatest concern is going out at night and meeting people). We hired a nanny at age 55 and she's been with us 10 years. Never had any phone/technology/missed work issues. We count ourselves lucky.

If you have a contract, and you don't put it into the contract, then there is no agreement regarding phone use. The contract would take precedence over an ad or verbal instruction.
That said, you can fire for any reason you want (so long as it isn't for violation of a civil right such as illegal discrimination on the basis of a protected class), so you could fire for cell phone use regardless of whether it's in your contract or not.

Yikes OP. Hire a nanny you trust and trust her judgement. We’ve had the same nanny for seven years and I’ve never seen her mess around on her phone. She does use it to organize play dates which is awesome. Apple Watch and using Alexa and all these alternatives are nuts just to avoid phone use.
Also sounds like you have one baby… what’s your plan when the baby no longer naps. I know it seems far down the road but presumably one wants to keep the same nanny long term and those years fly by. This level of control you want is not normal. Just simply discuss during the interview you don’t want her playing on the phone if this is your issue.

And she can ask Alexa or Google to pull up any song or rhyme she wants. We have both and Alexa in every room.
Paranoid about reasonable phone usage but ok with Alexa in every room. SMH.
I think you missed OP’s concerns. She clearly isn’t anti-technology and is giving away Apple watches. She just want the nanny engaged and paying attention to her child when the child is awake. Millions of people can’t use their phones while working. And it sounds like the nanny will have breaks during the day.
I really don’t get the nannies-go-berserk uproar. And I do think it’s something we’re going to see more and more.
The problem is that this is super controlling behavior. Abd the sad part is that it doesn’t help ensure that the nanny will be engaged with the baby. It sets up an adversarial relationship right off the bat and gives OP a false sense of security.

They have cellular models with its own service plan that don't need to pair with a phone to make or accept calls. I assume this is the model OP plans to give the nanny. I guess the nanny could be reachable on that in an emergency, but she would have to give everyone the number, which would be different from her personal phone number. I doubt OP, who is a control freak, would be down for that.
