I took a kid from 9th grade at Whitman (MCPS) and sent him to St Andrew's, a coed boarding high school in Delaware. Mine repeated 9th grade, but they also have admissions into the 10th grade and very good financial aid. A world of difference, in all positive ways. Do some research into what else is out there (no, I would not have home-schooled)

When schools aren’t allowed to suspend kids thanks to Grosso’s bill, what are they supposed to do?

Ridiculous. Everyone in our local public knew where the weed stairwell and bathroom was. Older kids passed along the info to younger kids. And yes, some used. Most didn't but wanted to avoid it.

The PP said her son knows kids are using heroin at Ft Reno. That’s not smoking weed in the bathroom. He’s part of it or he’s full of it.

This is not normal high school behavior even if it is common in DCPS.

OP I hope you find a good option and answer for your child. My experience was in middle school, and the best decision we ever made to pull. The school was toxic for my child, and the change was life saving. Don't be afraid of the change in itself or anyone else telling you "it's fine". The school we pulled from was "fine" for most but not for more than a few, but it only mattered for my one at that specific time.

New school, back to public (and yes he knew where the 'weed' stairwells were), then on to a successful college time.

Do research and I hope you find alternatives if that's what you decide.

Classic "my kid is a saint" parent who is shocked when their own kid pulls a Brett Kavanaugh or worse later on. Kids do all kinds of crazy stuff. Especially high SES and low SES communities, and even more when they go to the same schools or live just across the tracks from each other, or in this case, allegedly, across the park. Who was buying all the powder coke and black tar heroin when we were growing up? Who was dealing and using? UMC kids bought drugs with allowances - McLean, Bethesda... A lot of us working part-time jobs during Just Say No thought we were all grown-up with our cigarettes, malt liquor, and gasp... weed!

Wilson is horribly overenrolled by about 700 students. The principal, Kimberly Martin, resigned to take a job as a curriculum specialist or something of that sort before the school year.

Yes, there is a real problem with violence and drugs.
