Even here, when I was at GW my roommate from northern Virginia asked me how I could be Jewish because I had blond hair and blue eyes. Southern tend to ask what church you belong to within the first 5 minutes of meeting so be prepared for that.
This is not going to happen in college. I’ve lived in the South for all but a few years of my adult life and can only think of one time a newly introduced person brought up church.
Also grew up in the south. I assume these stories about being asked what church they attended occurred is very rural and lower income communities. Where I grew up, one would be more likely asked where they went to college or if they belong to the country club.
+1. Also in south. They don't ask about church.
I've found that many people who post on this board have "knowledge" of the South that is at least 20-30 years out of date.

What are you thinking?
No do not send your Jewish kid to school in the south.
While many colleges in the south have active Hillels the political climate now is not safe.
Do your homework.
I have lived in the south with my family it was not great before it's only going to get way worse. What are you thinking?
Florida schools have a ton of Jews UF graduate here. No way would I send my kid there or to Florida at all anymore.
South Florida would be FINE. Have you even BEEN to Boca Raton? It's like the South's version of Long Island!
Anonymous wrote:Hillel has stats on most schools (not all schools are affiliated with Hillel though). Sign up for their college guide. Also, there is a good FB group for Jewish parents of older teens. Lots of college info.

Tulane is a very safe place for Jewish students. My nephew called it "Jewlane."
Duke isn't too bad and neither is Vandy. UGa and UVA too.
The Hillel and Algenmeier (sp?) lists ranking safe schools are pretty accurate.

How did people know students were Jewish at Emory, unless their names were like, Mordechai Bernsteinberggoldman? I never told anyone I was jewish until after I'd established they were open-minded enough to not care.
