Interesting -- I haven;t watched it since having a kid. I'll have to go back and watch it again. I felt meh about it too - but that was well before I was a parent

OP here. Thanks for all the recommendations. We watched the Conjuring and now we're pretty much committed to finishing the Conjuring "universe". We'll see if The Conjuring 2 is as good as the first.

Let the Right One In. Either the Swedish or American version. Both are good.

I loved The Haunting of Bly Manor. Scary and enthralling with such a bittersweet ending.

I’m watching Midnight Mass now, which has the same director and many of the same actors.

PP who recommended Hill House. I actually didn’t like Bly Manor as much - I just rewatched it recently to give it a second chance. I’m also in the middle of Midnight Mass. I’ve got 3 episodes left, and I will admit that I watched it too late one night and it messed with my dreams. Still don’t like it as much as Hill House, but I am enjoying it.

The Orphanage

Also not a movie, but Syfy had this amazing series Channel Zero. It only lasted 4 seasons but it was genuinely scary and had some of the most disturbing imagery I’ve ever seen in a TV show.

It was an anthology series, each season took a popular creepypasta and expanded it. Season 2 was the best and season 1 was based on my all-time favorite creepypasta Candle Cove.

Highly recommend if you can find it.
