They are starting to build a bad reputation that could take a while to undo.
A reputation for dinginess is not the same as a reputation for everything else that is actually quite excellent. Yes, I'm a parent of junior there and they could not be happier. Believe it or not, smart kids don't care about a little dinginess. Honestly, it just emphasizes that Jesuit vibe. I guess you have to get it, to get it.

well that is in an actual dorm, not a fake room... W&M is quite famous for their lack of A/C in freshman dorms and they claim to bond over "suffering" through it.
To the poster who didn't get to tour it, it is a dark, dank corner room with no A/C. And before you all complain that it's only hot for a few weeks a year, we visited in November. It smelled musty and just no way could be dressed up to feel happy and bright. I'm not even sure windows were able to be opened.
It's ok she's at UVA and is in a huge double room that should be a triple and very happy with the light and the vibe.
My DC was a freshman at W&M last year and was in one of "worst dorms" with no AC, but with windows open with fan it was fine. Nothing special, but fine. Sophomore year now he's got a gorgeous room with huge windows, a great view and AC. And he fully appreciates it.
Same for my DD. Had a very large beautiful room in a historic building sophomore year. And sorority house junior year. Loved W&M.

I thought W&M was fixing that? Yes it’s very hot but easy to qualify for a window AC unit.

I should add that my DD who didn't like the dorm room at W&M also hated that Colonial Williamsburg was right there. Didn't feel like a college town to her, just a tourist trap. My DS loved it and probably would have ended up giving tours or working in CW had he gone there.

My freshman at W&M has a great, large room with AC and big windows. She’s in one of the smaller dorms and it’s really lovely. It’s a crap-shoot, but you could get lucky. About 50% of freshman dorms have AC.

My kids is in second year at W&M, and not really sure what they are talking about? It's a basement room--I think because they don't want to lose one of the ground/upper level rooms just to serve as a sample? Anyway, it's... a dorm room? We toured a lot of campuses, and I don't remember it sticking out as significantly different from what else we saw.
My kid is happy there, btw.
I will say in fairness it was the only dorm room we ever toured as other tours didn't let us in one so kudos to W&M for being open and realistic. My DS didn't mind it, but DD said no way.

Funny, my kid had the opposite reaction. The dorms are not a highlight, but the location and enthusiasm of the students overshadowed the dorms. But that is why it is important to visit and get an idea of what appeals and does not appeal.
