Yes, my ancestors (Quakers & Union soldiers) have tried to lift up others for centuries. And I’m not going anywhere.

It’s time to lift up black people in a meaningful way - eliminate the wealth gap.

Yup.

Let's stop racist thinking.

People are NOT their skin color.

Skin color DOES matter in our society. Two Harvard-educated lawyers head home at 9pm from the gym - one black and one white. Which one gets stopped by cops on the street for “fitting the description”?

Systemic racism exists today. The harm from slavery & Jim Crow continues today.

If whites were 12% of our country yet responsible for 50% of all violent crime, you bet it would be the white lawyer who would get stopped.

Why are black people disproportionately arrested and convicted of more crimes? Systemic racism.

You just made the case for reparations.

Um, they are arrested and stopped more because they are DOING more crime. Why is that hard to process? You think think all the black men (and women) sitting in jail for murder just were minding their own business and they were stopped, arresting, went to trial and convicted of murder (or rape, armed robbery, etc.) Look at crime stats. I’ve posted them before but won’t bother because facts seem to make more difference. But stats show black people commit more crime- by a lot- period. So yes, of course they are going to be arrested and convicted more. Go ahead and throw some money at that problem and see if it makes a difference. It won’t.

Several reasons why:
- less wealth
- less education
- fewer opportunities
- more patrolling & profiling
- more rigorous prosecution & sentences

Money, education, and opportunities are out there for taking-for everyone of any color. Time to start looking within and stop the blame game.

The whole point is that black people in the US have fewer opportunities, less money, and less education because of US policies.

It’s very telling that you place the blame on internal factors over external factors.

That is what the left wants you to believe, when it is convenient for their argument. It's convenient now because it is an election year and the left is pushing race relations.
Truth be told..... they have been provided the same, OR MORE, opportunities in that past few decades.

Examples?

Affirmative action
Title I funding in schools (not specifically for minorities, but they certainly benefit)
Loans specifically for minority owned businesses
Grants and scholarships specifically for minority students

I'm sure there are tons more.

Even back then young people were starting to have trouble handling viewpoints that differed from their own. I thought that was a more recent phenomenon.

I do not recall anything positive from the session. I do remember that we broke out into small groups and played some kind of version of Lifeboat.

I do not recall any interaction with Blacks sharing their experiences or such.

It seemed the goal of the class was to make whites feel guilty and Blacks feel victimhood. Since my background included working to help Black people (specifically children), I found this disturbing.

Trying to make people feel guilty for something they have not done leads to resentment, not understanding.

This applies to Black and white. This is may be one reason Blacks are so resentful of the police. I am not Black, but I would think they would resent being treated as guilty for the crimes of others in their race.

And, this also applies to whites who are not guilty of racism. I know I feel resentful when I am accused of being guilty of racism simply because I am white.

Neither guilt nor resentment are healthy emotions.

Sounds like a crappy class.

Let’s take out emotions.

Fact: There is a wealth gap in the US, caused by US policies.

Let’s acknowledge it and try to fix it. You don’t need to “feel guilty” to support that.

Alright so how many dollars is a traffic worth? Do you get paid per stop? If we pay you now, is it okay to keep stopping and pay your great grandchildren again?

F U, racist trash

F u too.

I am totally on board with ending systemic racism. I am not on board with the theory that you deserve any money because of slavery. There is a huge difference between these two things.

And my post was meant to point that out. Yeah, the black guy is more likely to be stopped on the way. Let's put an end to that. Were you stopped unfairly twenty years? Many people were. Do you really want money for that? Really? Or would you prefer not to be stopped tomorrow? Which would really help you?

Getting stopped by the police is a symptom of deeper inequality.

Fix the root problem - the wealth gap (economic inequality) - and a lot of the other problems go away.

Doubtful, the same issues that blacks run into in this country, they have in asian and european societies as well. Perhaps the world at large is racist against people of african origin.

I believe this is true. First, most people are biased against those not part of “their” group (race, ethnicity, religion, culture). It is our nature. So we must learn to overcome it. However, for blacks their origin is the poorest continent on the planet where their own leaders sold them into bondage across the globe. So they were looked at as subhuman for centuries, by almost all cultures and nations. It will take a loooong time to get over that, if ever. All you can do, as a non-black is to try to mentally put yourself in a black person’s shoes and think about the fear and criticism they have to live with everyday and how it would make you feel after a few weeks, months, years, and a lifetime. Then try to have empathy and try to give a helping hand via opportunity and fairness, but not thru handouts and artificial, temporary advantages - as that makes it worse by perpetuating resentment from those already predisposed to resent.

Post 06/26/2020 22:42     Subject: Re:It's (finally) time for reparations. It's time for the US to pay its debt.

If black lives are to truly matter in America, this nation must move beyond slogans and symbolism. Citizens don’t inherit just the glory of their nation, but its wrongs too. A truly great country does not ignore or excuse its sins. It confronts them and then works to make them right. If we are to be redeemed, if we are to live up to the magnificent ideals upon which we were founded, we must do what is just.

It is time for this country to pay its debt. It is time for reparations.

My question to those in favor of reparations as frased above:

Are you also in favor of reparations to the victims of war, torture, and oppression promoted by the US in other parts of the world?
The carpet bombing of Vietnam, the hundreds of thousands that died in Iraq, the wars in Central America, Yemen, the executions in Chile. The list, as you all know, is very long and affects multiple times more people of color than the descendants of slaves and native people in the US.

I anticipate that your answer is a resounding YES, OF COURSE! We stand in solidarity with all victims of oppression, and in particular with those that are victims of American policies.

Now how is US going to fund all these reparations abroad? Because if it were really sincere and equanimous about it, all current citizens of the US would likely end up poorer than our current poorest.

The point I am trying to make is that there is not enough wealth to right the wrongs. The solution is through systemic changes within the US and in its relationship to other countries.
