age doesn't correlate absolutely with "leadership skills" and "being smart". particularly in a scenario where someone is only months older than someone else.... you do realize that correct???

Im really nervous about the decision. All of her preschool friends will be leaving, although all going to diff schools so it's not like she would be with them anyway.
Before making such a decision, I’d advise you to think of the poor December-born kids who would have to put up with a classmate 16 months older than them.

Wrong. Cutoff for schools in the DMV and most of the United States is September. They do not allow exceptions for early entry.
MD actually does allow exceptions if the kid’s birthday in the 6(?) week period before or after the cutoff.

I am going to redshirt my daughter., I'm in TX and it doesn't seem as common here as DC. Shes an August 1 bday, I think academically she would do fine. She been in preschool forever and does great. I redshirted my DC in PreK because he was struggling with handwriting and his private school required me to redshirt him in order to remain enrolled. He was born at the cutoff, so I agreed. Two other private schools insisted on redshirting him for other reasons at K and 8th grade. Each time, I declined and changed schools rather than redshirting. One of my smartest decisions as a parent and he is thriving in 11th grade in public honors/ AP now.

No matter whether you hold August kids back or send them on time, there will be kids who are almost a year older (September kids who just missed the cutoff will be a year older).

My August DD was reading well, doing baby math (adding), sat still, was eager to learn and couldn't wait for Kindergarten. She turned 5 a week before school started.
My July DS was not reading, couldn't sit still, took naps still, and needed hours on the playground daily. I think in another life, he would have been ready for K, but in this terrible school system where kids have to sit still for 7 hours a day, no naps, minimal playground time- he wasn't ready. He was just as smart as my DD, but his attention span wasn't there.
