Well, have you been to any stores lately? People may be acting "cool" on the outside, but I guarantee they stocked up and probably cancelled spring break plans if it involves commercial flying. Every company my family and friends work in/are on the board of have restricted travel, all the private schools have issued related restrictions, as have colleges. Quite, non-panicked, action to self-protect among the 5-1%.

People may be stocking up, but I was out this weekend and it was life as usual. So IDK if people stocked up and then said -- hey let's go to dinner + kid's soccer game. Or if the people are hoarding at Costco are different than the people who were at Starbucks and out to brunch this weekend. All I'm saying is NoVa didn't look empty to me -- people were out and about as they normally would be including the gym, kid events, restaurants etc. Sure maybe people are taking precautions by not getting on a plane if they don't need to, but IDK people in real life who are really hunkering down and not leaving home.

Over 60 here, in average health. I go out to do the things I must such as work, pick up prescriptions, get gas. I've given up most of the optional things like dinner out, going to the gym, volunteering, church (technically obligatory but our pastor hasn't heeded warnings not to use a common chalice or shake hands). Giving up activities I enjoy hasn't been great for my morale, but I'm trying to do what I can. I'll probably still get it eventually through my work or grandchildren (they live with me and are still in school).

Not to sound snippy but it's possible that no-one in your real life circle feels comfortable enough to share their concerns.

Here are two Twitter threads for you to glance over. You may think they are doomers. They sound very reasonable and fact-based to me but it's been adapted for layman understanding and the Twitter platform's format.

On why close schools:

On what the exponential nature of this disease's spread implies:

I don't know anyone who has cancelled spring break plans.

Not that they'll tell you. They know you'll think they are nuts.

Huh? I could totally understand why people would. No one I know has.

I know people who have. Trip to Asia, canceled. Trip to Vegas, canceled. Trip to Seattle, canceled. And I know a bunch of people who went to Costco over the last week and a half and stockpiled. Upper NW DC.

Cousin living in Seattle...kids are gong to school. Husband travels several times a week for work. Traveling over Spring Break. Told me the press is nuts.

If we don’t close schools early we WILL close them at the height of the outbreak and they will be closed for longer.

It’s hard to know in advance.

But few countries that have closed schools have reopened yet.

Hong Kong is closed till April at least.

The deep cleaning of schools carries risk of its own. The bleach and other vapors from harsh chemicals will linger in the indoor air for A VERY LONG TIME. The air quality will not only be compromised but kids with asthma and other allergies might get very sick from breathing it, even healthy kids should not be exposed. The chlorine bleach is not safe to breath in any amount. Who will be checking and monitoring air safety???

+1000

I highly doubt the schools are going to close "just in case." They will wait for something to happen first. They will not have community support if they close before even 1 student or teacher gets sick.

+1

With the preliminary US mortality numbers available now, I have increasing doubts that schools will close for extended periods of time. Maybe here and there when there are confirmed cases, to deep clean.

Should’t have parents a right and say in protecting their kids in democracy?

Hey, overreactor. Curious where you’re originally from.
