people are also coming out of the woodwork because they love Serena and see her as vehicle for their own crusade. They have no idea who she is tennis-wise, the magnitude of her accomplishments and they have no understanding of what actually happened on Saturday.

See but this is where it is so interesting. I watched the match and thought Serena was doing her best to intimidate Naomi. Whenever they changed courts Serena would just march thru and Naomi would stand aside. I thought the whole barking about her daughter (which really annoyed me as well as her commercials whispering about mama ) were to intimidate Naomi and get her off her game. At least distract everyone from her athletic performance. Also I thought it interesting she was more concerned about her reputation than the actual game.

I thought Naomi was super amazing to stay focused on the game and ignore the tantrum. After it was all over and she won, the emotion poured out.

WTA CEO is on her side, issued a statement that:

“Yesterday also brought to the forefront the question of whether different standards are applied to men and women in the officiating of matches. The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women and is committed to working with the sport to ensure that all players are treated the same. We do not believe that this was done last night.”

Probably most of us have watched some tennis but not on any regular sort of basis. I probably wouldn't recognize half the players' names today but I do know who Serena is. I clicked on this thread to find out what she had done to make Op call her a bully and a crybaby...and now I know.

I have since seen the videos of her meltdown and I tend to agree that she acted like a crybaby. A female John McEnroe.

For all those arguing about the double standard, read this and you will know that you need to watch it to see it. She got the warning early in the second set and not much came out of it. She continued to play. When she lost another game and was down 3-1, she smashed her raquet and got a violation, which is standard and not discretionary. After that the tantrum came on full blown calling back to coaching that was already done and in the past. She had a tantrum because she was losing, plain and simple. She never got a point deducted for coaching. If she is that outraged why didn't she immediately have a tantrum?


umm.. this is what some of us have been explaining throughout the thread. some posters simply refused to listen and insist that she was docked a game merely because she dared challenge the umpire.


The article literally says that men act that way and get away with it but she doesn't think men should get away with it.

What some are explaining is that if men get to challenge the umpire so do women. If women don't then men don't.

It's not that complicated, make a rule and execute it equally.

Every superstar is surrounded by enablers. I’ll still watch her because she’s an awesome athlete but she’s definitely a questionable person and I am dissappointed in her behavior. The irony is that she cited motherhood as a rationale for why she wouldn’t cheat where I would have thought it would be the rationale for her acting with grace and maturity.

She's the only reason you (and many others) watch women's tennis. Like her or not, you'll keep watching as long as she's around.
