I wish I hadn’t read the WaPo article with the mother saying she walked in on her child with the man, and was so shocked she just shut the door and went back to the living room. holy $hit. She just left her kid in there. I’m speechless.

I'm not one of those "it could never happen to me" parents or someone who envisions going full mixed martial arts specialist on every mugger, but I truly cannot envision seeing my child being abused and not going totally feral. Calmly shutting the door and going back into the living room for a sip of my G+T would not be on the menu.

I thought something was happening to my DD when she was 3 with some older boys and I literally impulsively just went ballistic. It’s like a reflex, you just act. I have no regrets about making a scene, grabbing my DD and yelling like crazy. None. I cannot understand any parent that just walks away. WTAF

She is just as guilty as him by not protecting the innocent children this monster harmed.

The comments about the wife are a bit over the top. If you unwittingly married a predator, would you believe the first allegation? I bet none of you would. And if you came to gradually suspect your husband... what would you do in a foreign country? I think you would first think of your children, and what would happen to them if they were left parentless, without relatives close by, due to your possible detention. Your husband would be dead to you, but you'd have to slog through a divorce, etc, and have to live the rest of your life knowing that at any moment, someone who searches the internet can connect you back to this monster.

I think we all would try to leave with our kids, honestly. She probably feels terrible for the victims, but her kids are her priority.

Not really. The wife has probably been living a nightmare since the first allegation came out, and perhaps she'd made up her mind to leave anyway. And if they're anonymous run-of-the-mill workers, why would they pop up on the first pages of Google? No one in my family does.

She's allowed to travel, since she's not the accused. I don't know if she's already left for good, but since she's originally from Japan, reports that she'd left already may just mean she was traveling there to see family.

I concur with a PP that if your spouse is implicated in a serious crime in a foreign country, you do NOT want an entanglement and you LEAVE. Everyone should do the same. I do not blame the wife in the least.

She obviously didn’t want to get investigated. If she was a decent, innocent person, she would have offered to speak with the detectives.

It's not uncommon for foreign nationals (or dual citizens) who work for international organizations to want to avoid getting tangled up in the U.S. justice system. One of the first things a prosecutor will do is request or seek a court order that the person not leave the state/country. If the prosecutor believes the person is a flight risk (either as a material witness or co-conspirator), s/he may request the court order seizure of the person's U.S. passport.
