Arresting judges, like this one in Milwaukee or elected leaders, like the one in Newark on false or thin charges, are what authoritarians do. This is a shot across the bow.

ICE had multiple opportunities to arrest the person outside the courtroom but wanted to make a show of doing it in the courtroom. The judge didn't want to be a party to the show Patel was hoping for.

Bottom line: regardless of whether or not you believe the judges deserves to be jailed, the fact remains that her arrest will have long-lasting effects--1) on the relationship between state judiciaries and federal immigration enforcement but also on 2) public perceptions of judicial impartiality and the rule of law. ​The government chose to make an example of her in an effort to stifle future pushback from other state judges around immigration law
