Didn't the Russians do something similar with Ukrainians?
Anonymous wrote:It really isn't that complicated. Ever since the war in 1973, there's been a general understanding between Syria and Israel over the Golan Heights. That particular corner of the world has been fairly peaceful for 50 years. It tends to be Druze and those on the Israeli side have been absorbed within Israeli society without issue for decades.
The sudden collapse of the Assad regime and the resultant abandonment of positions by the Syrian army changed things. If you've ever been to the region, you can visibly see how important the Golan Heights are strategically for anyone that controls them. Or is subject to anyone else that controls the Golan Heights. It's an important piece of geography.
Syrian government forces abandoned this extremely significant, strategically important, high land with the collapse of the Assad government. There are a dozen militias in Syria, including ISIS. It's not unreasonable for Israel to secure the area during a time of turbulence.
I don't trust the Netanyahu government at all. But I think this is a momentary national security issue that's driving things, rather than a move to change borders with a well-established state. The next move will be dependent on how the situation in Syria unfolds. Israel taking land is untenable. But securing their country from threats from violent Islamic radicals like Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS and so on will be broadly supported in the short term.

You people are so disgusting with your Israel obsession. I hope it keeps you up at night.
Because within 48 hours it was pretty clear that Syria wasn't "liberated." Its just being carved up by colonial powers and Islamic warlords with all that comes with it.
lol well this entire thread is about Israel despite the fact that pretty much only Israel took actions consistent of limited defense of its own borders, and took other steps for the common good (destroying chemical weapons). Crickets about Turkey, US, Russia and Iran.
I'm just going to sit back and patiently wait for the Rules Based Order to sanction Turkey and Israel like they did Russia and Iran for far less.
Did Israel invade and annex part of another country that did nothing to provoke the attack?
Of course not. Inconvenient, since the facts belie the narrative some here like to promote.
Anyway, Syria is a story which is still unfolding. Optimists hope the rebels represent a positive change; pessimists suspect it'll be "second verse, same as the first", just with different thugs and autocrats in charge. Clearly, Israel's rapid creation of border buffer zones suggest it has no faith that the new regime can be counted on to exercise restraint if it comes into possession of the old regime's mustard gas and sarin supplies, not to mention its warships and other conventional weapons. Time will tell.

Maybe because Israel has yet to return land in the Golan Heights region of Syria that it has unlawfully occupied in violation of international law for over five decades … ?
Or maybe because Israel has a track record of promoting instability in its neighboring countries, including Syria?
Or maybe because Israel was reported by CNN to have struck Syria nearly 500 times with missile attacks in the first two days since the Assad government fell?
Or maybe because … once a liar, always a liar?
This Israel obsession rots your brain.
Sure, Jan.
You confuse contempt for obsession. That’s OK, hardly surprising, didn’t gave high hopes for you anyway.
This is literally a thread about Syria. The media is full of stories about the almost miraculous liberation of the Syrian people. Thousands upon thousands of refugees coming home. Political prisoners being liberated. Women walking freely. And all you can do is obsess about Israel, Israel, Israel. It's pathetic.
DP
You, on the other hand, very clearly obsess over policing the public square in a feeble effort to sweep under the rug the decades of immoral, repugnant actions undertaken by Israel and cheered on by the Zionists who blindly, unconditionally support Israel.
No one's policing anything. I haven't reported your posts. I just think they are pathetic.

Yes. Although technically they haven't annexed their newly acquired Syrian holdings yet.
