I'd like to think the SCOTUS will stick to the law, but this court has pushed the court into political activism. I don't know how the court will rule. Thomas, et al are horrible partisans, not worthy of the SCOTUS.

I don’t think anyone is so surprised at what Trump is willing to do; I think some are surprised at how nakedly partisan ostensibly non-partisan judges are and how much the GOP does to protect Trump while pretending that Trump is a Democratically-created problem instead of him being a monster of their own creation.
The problem is that the partisan judges and self-interested politicians help continue to normalize Trump for GOP voters. When you have a fragile, impressionable voter base, it's morally wrong to continue equivocating and obfuscating for more ratings and more funding.
