In the flashback Ryan takes the gun at night and returns it that same night after he shoots Erin. So there is no way the old guy would have known the gun was missing in the first place. I liked it but Mare and all the characters were just giant PA cliches. That whole area looks so bleak, everyone kind of a loser, violent, sleeping with their underage cousins etc. Finally a show that makes the south look more progressive. Jean Smart is awesome though.

The kid grabbed his dad’s secret burner phone, texted Erin, and told her to meet at the park. Why didn’t the police see this text? WTH? They should have been able to trace it.
I came here to post this. I'm confused by this too. And if Erin texted to John's primary phone via her burner, why was it programmed as Erin? Why not program it as "Dentist" or some other alias?
I also don't get why she is ok planting drugs on her grandson's mother but is not ok letting the killer off the hook. The character's motivations aren't consistent. She sometimes lets people off the hook and sometimes doesn't. The number of red herrings was also a bit too much. But I love Kate Winslet so I still like the series.

I wanted to see some kind of growth from Mare, in particular. But as far as I can tell, she didn't really grow or change at all. She planted drugs on her grandson's mother and she ended up relapsing... that is HORRIFIC. I realize she didn't use the drugs that Mare planted her but Mare actively undermined an addict.
Her "big moment" at the end is that she is willing to go look in the attic and ... think about Kevin? It's unclear.
I also thought it was beyond ridiculous the way she and six other cop cars rolled into a junior high school, lights going ... at the exact moment Kevin was on the playground? What the heck?
Even though it would have been difficult ethically, part of me would have rather seen her choose to delete the video of the incident... simply because it would have been unexpected. Instead we see yet another example of Mare being a stickler and unwilling to deal with her own shit. Although I suppose you could argue that it is a weird inversion of the time she deleted the video of the graffiti guy.
So much potential but I felt very unsatisfied by that ending.

As PPs pointed out, this never in a million years would have been deemed an acceptable custodial placement in reality.

I can’t remember if she is raising DJ because the paternity became public or because she is Erin’s closest family. John is locked up so I can see why they might feel growing up with family is best for the child.

I think Erin called from her burner and that’s why the police didn’t see the call. I don’t recall if that was John’s normal cell but I thought it was. But then why program her in as Erin? Unless it was one of those cell phone guesses.
