Telling someone to kill themself crosses a line that you can’t come back from. She needs to remain cancelled.

Some people are saying mean stuff but most people are simply criticizing her behavior. There is a difference. It's not "mean" to call someone out for being a jerk. Sometimes the truth hurts.

This whole incident is interesting to me because I have to admit that I always assume rich and famous people are probably jerks. Like even the "good" celebrities, I am very cynical about it and would not be totally shocked if someone like Tom Hanks turned out to be really full of himself or privately terrible. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I wouldn't be shocked.

I always assume really beautiful women who are wealthy and famous are probably stuck up, and even if they do a good job of presenting a kind facade, I assume that on some level they think they are better and more deserving of attention than other women. Again, I'm not upset about it, it's just what I assume. It's in their interest to never show this side and in fact to demonstrate a much more magnanimous, kind nature. But what are the odds that Taylor Swift privately made fun of awkward, ugly girls back when she was growing up in school? I feel they are probably pretty high, no matter how sweet she comes off as now.

So the Chrissy Teigan stuff is fascinating to me because she didn't really even try to hide any of this stuff but people just gave her the benefit of the doubt (and many continue to) because she's pretty and famous and her husband seems cool and her kids are cute. But none of that has ever stopped the non-famous I know IRL to refrain from saying mean, catty things about other women behind their back (and occasionally to their faces). In fact, having an enviable life often seems to make people more likely to behave this way.

So why are we ever surprised by any of this? Do people actually think that if they met Chrissy Teigan, she'd have warm and complimentary feelings toward them? I doubt she'd even acknowledge my existence, and if she did, it would mostly be for show ("look how nice I am acknowledging this total no one!").

Truly kind people are hard to come by, I have no idea why anyone thinks being wealthy and famous would make it more likely. It obviously makes it less likely.

I like her but I agree with above. And I say this as someone who did something terrible that hurt people. It took me at least a year of self-reflection and therapy to start gaining perspective on my actions, and to begin truly learning from them. I completely think people can change, but that change and work is not based on validation from others...it's from within, and that's what I don't think she understands yet.

Me three. I read the Medium piece, where she centers her “sobs” and otherwise comes across as a wholly disingenuous crap sack. The reason she felt good punching down at the people she did was because she perceived - correctly, unfortunately - that oversexualized and/or addicted young women are regarded as trash. Maybe she can claim edgelord failure with her tweets about the 9 year old Oscar nominee, but the rest of it is bullshit.

I was both mean girled and a mean girl in hs. I'm very glad social media didn't exist, feel shame about my behavior, and am glad i've grown since then. Doesn't excuse my behavior then, but we should all be allowed to grow

I agree with this.

I am SO glad I have never done very much posting on my opinions on the internet. Culture shifts. Things that are funny in 2010 are not seen as funny today. It's a much faster evolution than it used to be.

I don't know. I still kind of like her. But I do agree she needs to knock it off for a bit.
