And what if you're descendant of European immigrants who came AFTER slavery had been abolished?
They're exempt from any payment, correct?
They chose to come to a racist country with policies that harmed black people.

Yes, my ancestors (Quakers & Union soldiers) have tried to lift up others for centuries. And I’m not going anywhere.
It’s time to lift up black people in a meaningful way - eliminate the wealth gap.
You get no credit for that and PP's judgment is based solely on his/her perception of your race.

Yup.
Let's stop racist thinking.
People are NOT their skin color.
Skin color DOES matter in our society. Two Harvard-educated lawyers head home at 9pm from the gym - one black and one white. Which one gets stopped by cops on the street for “fitting the description”?
Systemic racism exists today. The harm from slavery & Jim Crow continues today.
If whites were 12% of our country yet responsible for 50% of all violent crime, you bet it would be the white lawyer who would get stopped.
Why are black people disproportionately arrested and convicted of more crimes? Systemic racism.
You just made the case for reparations.
Um, they are arrested and stopped more because they are DOING more crime. Why is that hard to process? You think think all the black men (and women) sitting in jail for murder just were minding their own business and they were stopped, arresting, went to trial and convicted of murder (or rape, armed robbery, etc.) Look at crime stats. I’ve posted them before but won’t bother because facts seem to make more difference. But stats show black people commit more crime- by a lot- period. So yes, of course they are going to be arrested and convicted more. Go ahead and throw some money at that problem and see if it makes a difference. It won’t.

Alright so how many dollars is a traffic worth? Do you get paid per stop? If we pay you now, is it okay to keep stopping and pay your great grandchildren again?
F U, racist trash
F u too.
I am totally on board with ending systemic racism. I am not on board with the theory that you deserve any money because of slavery. There is a huge difference between these two things.
And my post was meant to point that out. Yeah, the black guy is more likely to be stopped on the way. Let's put an end to that. Were you stopped unfairly twenty years? Many people were. Do you really want money for that? Really? Or would you prefer not to be stopped tomorrow? Which would really help you?
And just to be clear, if you don't think we can put a dollar amount on a traffic stop, you have understood me. Now think about what we can do about traffic stops.
Getting stopped by the police is a symptom of deeper inequality.
Fix the root problem - the wealth gap (economic inequality) - and a lot of the other problems go away.
But the argument all along has been that systemic racism is the root problem.

Reparations of some form could help bridge the wealth gap caused by US policies and on-going systemic racism. Wealth begets wealth. If more black people had wealth, more would have more opportunities. More are likely to have a job. More are likely to stay out of trouble.
Reparations (as part of larger social reform) could help break that cycle created by and perpetuated by white people.
Well maybe. But this is not an argument for reparations. This is an argument for reducing wealth inequality. Which is really quite a different thing.

We didn't chose to stay. Slavery ended and black people had NOTHING. Remember, it was illegal for us to even learn to read and write. Where were we going?

Right. So you are going to not pay taxes? Because you will not be writing a personal check.
I think PP is suggesting you will face a taxpayer revolt.
Ironic. Wouldn’t that result in privatized prisons having more funding as the tax evaders were locked up? Who benefits most from that?

That's correct. But that's how reparations work. Nobody cares that her ancestors helped slaves. They only care that she white, therefore she must pay black people. Even if she is a poor white person with some black ancestors, she must pay wealthy black people with some white ancestry.
Lifting people up in a meaningful way? I am all for that. But that's an entirely different and much better way to conceptualize this.
-Someone whose ancestors suffered other injustices, fought in different armies, and helped different people
