It should actually be easier to homeschool now because there is so much material available via the internet. I know families who do it and then supplement in high school by doing dual enrollment at NOVA. There are so many resources in northern Virginia for homeschoolers. It's truly incredible.

Look at the homeschooling laws. The best source of information about the homeschooling laws by state is the Home School Legal Defense Association, but they're a pack of scary fanatics, and I'm not linking to their page. In some states, you don't even have to notify the school district that you're homeschooling.

Here's a solution and something the feds can do:

Make all learning materials open source. Set up places for low income people to use computers to source the materials 24/7 (for any age---not just K-12). Make preschool free for every citizen (nothing to do with income at all). Give free lunch to everyone. Make people who are paying taxes feel like they are getting something so that they continue to support taxation (which is actually being threatened by these people going to private schools and homeschooling). If education is important, this is the kind of access the federal government should give. Tweaking standards and putting in testing requirements is working from the wrong end. Outcome based education does not work. You have to start with the input, not the output.
