Rehoboth 3.5 percent extra with card yesterday

Just take that off the tips. You likely aren't going back there anyways.. Let the waiters fight it out with their a-hole boss..

Suppose your boss said I want to pay you via credit card so I get points. Then he deducts 3.5 percent paycheck is that fair?

Waiting tables is a low skilled job and everyone can do it. Learn a different skill and find a different job then. Nobody is obligated to get them into middle class.

Such an ignorant post. My daughter’s roommate at school in NYC was 17 years old and worked two nights a week making $400 a night checking coats at a club. They were pursuing arts degrees. This is a typical scenario of restaurant workers in nyc and LA. See how many actors and others who waited tables before making it or while pursuing a degree.

Some have made careers out of restaurant work. One waiter my daughter knows is about 60 and raised two girls working at high end restaurants. One daughter went to Harvard, the other one I forget but is successful and happy.

So STFU with your uninformed opinions. You’re just a cheapskate trying to put other people down

Went out to a nice drinks and dinner this weekend for our anniversary. We have two young kids and this was our first nice date in probably two years.

Both places charged 22% auto gratuity. The restaurant has a Michelin star.

So yeah, this is the default moving forward at nicer spots. Once you add in tax, you need to add about 30% to any price you see on the menu. 22% gratuity on alcohol is ridiculous.

You are paying a premium for the club and food.

Yes, I am aware of this. And the club, the food, and the freedom from "the bill" is all 100% worth it.

Ridiculous! When I'm prompted I hit no tip. I still consider 15% decent and 20% good. If they want more then that, they need a better job. Once the employers have a hard time with staffing they will raise wages. It's called capitalism.

To raise wages they’ll raise prices, and by more than the tipped amount because it will be taxed more. But if you’d rather pay more overall just not as tips, have at it!

I’d much rather pay the real price so that staff could earn a good wage for their hard work. Their employer should be paying them their full wage and working those wages into the prices. And I don’t care if I have to pay more in taxes: that’s the price of living in our society, and I am happy to pay that.

Twenty years ago I worked at a club that paid a good wage and added an 18% gratuity to every check which was shared by all the servers, bartenders and bussers. Lots of people tipped on top of that.

Restaurant owners make plenty. They could share the profits.

Sometimes I just don't tip. Especially if it's a place I won't go back to. I freaking hate tipping the whole thing needs to end.
Stop tipping!

I have never tipped 22% in my life and I never will. I'm 43.

I do 15% pre-tax as a standard tip for expected service — either rounded up or down to the nearest dollar. I’ll go up to 20% if service was exceptional. I’ll go down to nothing if service was bad and the server didn’t care.

Tipping in general has gotten out of hand in the US. It’s shifted from an earned reward to an entitled demand. It’s gone from “tipping the server” to “fleecing the customer.”

Agree on the general sentiments, but at 15% you’re cheating the server. It hasn’t been 15% for many many years.

Similarly, if you order just a kids macaroni and a plate of soup for yourself, then you are cheating the waiter because she could have gotten a table where someone orders steak and dessert and drinks

You’re ridiculous.
