What is most bizarre is that you can go to places like Ohio and upstate New York and see Confederate flags. The winners rooting for the losers.

The absolute most mind-boggling are West Virginians flying confederate flags. Do these people have any pride in place at all?

For many people there's a dumb-as-a-stump "ah'm a rebbul" aspect to flying the Confederate flag. And it's largely people who don't read and don't know history well.

Ummmm: “Cowboy hats” ??!!! Those must be either transplants or recent affectations. Northern Virginia had tobacco farms, some corn, and small family farms. Some horses, sure, but cowboy hats aren’t a traditional sign of “heritageal geographic representation” in Northern Virginia. You sound confused. Did you somehow mistake trucker caps for cowboy hats?

Loudoun County's "beautiful southern way of life" included segregated schools until 1968.

Because it was always about white supremacy. In Arizona it was making sure the Indians and Mexicans knew who was boss.

First of all, Arizona has exactly 5 civil war monuments. Additionally, Tucson has had Mexican-Americans on city council since day 1. I think people forget that it was Mexican territory so many, many Mexicans lived there until America decided to make it a state in 1912. Most of the monuments were gifts from Southern groups.

And the reason Arizona was granted statehood in 1912 was that the 1910 census showed that for the first time it had a majority-white population.

And ask yourself, why would Southern groups be making gifts of Civil War memorials to Arizona in the mid-20th century?
