About once a month, when my DH goes out for drinks with his friends, I wear my rattiest sweatpants and eat XXtra-Hot Cheetos, top ramen noodles and watch Golden Girls. I don’t know if my sodium-bomb evening counts, but it feels gloriously trashy.

I have two friends who grew up in trailers as kids. One told me this quietly, off to the side, holding herself in such a way I could tell she was nervous sharing it with me. She's one of the classiest people I know, as is the other woman. And I don't normally use that word. I hope you don't consider yourself trashy for how you grew up.

There really isn't one like pretty much this entire thread. People's definition of trashy here are so random. And don't get me started on the "anything remotely not associated with UMC/wealthy is trashy" sentiment found throughout this thread. Some DCUMers have a huge inferiority complex about social class and they don't realize it makes them look desperate vs. classy.
BTW, From a random google search, the definition of trashy:adjective. tastelessly showy. synonyms: brassy, cheap, flash, flashy, garish, gaudy, gimcrack, loud, meretricious, tacky, tatty, tawdry tasteless.

A lot of people on DCUM seem to have petite bourgeoisie tendencies. From this thread, there seems to be a lot of "My God, what will the neighbors think?!!!" (to which the answer should be, who cares what the neighbors think?). For a supposedly educated and well-traveled group of people, there is a surprising tendency of provincialism and parochialism.

I mean, there are people here who are scandalized by two piece bikinis at the pool, and tattoos on people. But the disapproval about drinking out of a soda can is head-scratching to me.


What if the well travelled and educated group of people are 300lbs?

I've lived in a mobile home.

The boyfriend did not have indoor plumbing in his house until he was in 9th grade. Prior to that the family used the outhouse. He is first gen graduate of college from The Ohio State.

I put the back car payments (2) and repo fee of $600 on my credit card so that the car would be released and the person in my circle would have transportation to get to her weekend job.

The name of the tow company was Predator Towing. These fees are really predatory.

This is just a theory but Americans are drinking sodas everywhere all of the time. In Japan no one walks around on the street drinking sodas.
In Europe you would sit at a cafe and the soda would be poured into a glass from which you would imbibe while relaxing at the cafe.

So, again, just a theory Americans drink sodas everywhere, all the time. The rest of the world pours sodas into a glass and drinks them in a relaxing social setting.

Understandably the homeowners don't want the detergents/chemicals/oils/chlorine from the swimsuit fabric in
their hot tub - it has nothing to do with being 'rapey' is that even a word?

We have a similar rule for hot tub use in our home. It has nothing to do with sex, its about cleanliness. Have you
ever maintained a hot tub? Unless cared for properly and the water treated, a hot tub is the breeding ground for a
multitude of bacteria and organisms. Those bubbles you see floating on the surface of a hot tub are body oils, lotions,
and other chemicals/detergents that are carried into the bubbling hot water. A showered "naked" person is cleaner
than a person wearing a swimsuit. We have a shower near the hot tub for people to use.

Guests in our home understand our hot tub use policy, and if they feel differently, they are under no
obligation to get in the hot tub. They are welcome to enjoy the pool and sauna wearing their swimsuits.We have
no children living in our home, and 99.9% of our guests are child free as well. This is about adults being adults.

Sometimes I feel like DCUM is so insular. Have you never been to Japan, Korea, or Scandinavia? There's tons of public nudity in their hot tubs/springs and saunas. It's not seen as sexual at all--families are nude in front of each other, colleagues as well. It's just.a.body.
Not the person you're responding to, but I was an exchange student in Sweden and there was "some" nudity but it wasn't nearly as ubiquitous as you're trying to make it out to be. Also, the PP you're referring to doesn't live in Korea, Japan or Scandinavia. She lives in the U.S. and is allowed to judge things based on that standard, not the standard of another culture entirely.

As someone who has lived in Korea for decades I assure you there is no mixed sex bathing going on in reputable (read legal) establishments.


Mixed or not wasn't the question. Simply nudity in front of non-sex partners. Don't move the goalposts here.
