Something tells me you were not aware it is called the western literary canon. Are you the 22 year old, Lady Cannon by any chance?

Seriously, how can you be so righteuous and ignorant at the same time? I guess if you weren't so ignorant, you'd have some doubt that you are in posession of a profound truth.

This about it deeply for a while, doesn't that make you a bigot?

Just to help with the thoght process:
bigotry = obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction

Nope not me, but go on. Still waiting for someone to criticize my book list.
And I agree with pp to the extent of children need to see themselves in a little bit of what they read, not just in slavery, bombings, racism, etc.

Oh stop with the sick puppet posting, it’s obvious it’s the same person.

Not debating the merits of teaching Shakespeare or not. I will say that women defend the patriarchy, male authors, all male panels because it’s what they know and therefore comfortable.

To the person who said you can’t read the cannon as it’s 500-1000 books. Wait what? How many books do you read a year? How old are you? I’m 100 plus books in already this year. I read a history book yesterday and reading a book on totalitarianism now. Do you read that slow or do you hate reading?

Go sulk that your kid didn’t get the same education the exact same way you did. Clearly that education gave you the critical thinking skills so don’t defend the status quo, have great time management skills and know how to effect change for all.

But yea I’m lady cannon or a 22 year old. I’m a K St professional, prep school educated, old DC money.

With all your money it seems you still are barely able to put coherent thoughts together. Luckily for you that money is bolstering you through, bribes are a wonderful investment for people such as yourself.

You should criticize my education for my “coherent thoughts”. You should know by now money doesn’t buy brains - see last administration, every Real Housewife, etc.

Money buys money though and undeserved jobs.

In your expert opinion, what books are making our kids smarter? Harry Potter? Oh no, that's with the author that doesn't support trans rights... Soon only the books on Lady Cannon's list will be approved staples for consumption lol.

Unless you are saying kids should not read books anymore, since they don't get them smarter by reading them.

I beg to differ, reading 100 books from the canon will make them smarter, happier and more interesting human beings.

I posted some books already, I can’t be bothered again. (Not white supremacy books lol)

And again, why are you acting like you’re under 25 and your brain hasn’t fully developed? Did I say reading in general doesn’t help you grow? No, I said Shakespeare.
I also said some will be read anyway.

Why do you keep referencing HP? Do you not know any other modern authors lmao. No wonder you love Shakespeare so much, must be the era in which you transmigrated from.

Please, no more book suggestions, enough damage has been done already!

Thank you for the clarfication, just to make sure I got it right, reading in general does help one grow, just not Shakespeare. Some will read anyway, against your advice, but... no gains! Got it!

Harry Potter is referenced as a stand in for popular but low quality books. There is the argument that at least it gets kids reading instead of playing video games. The opposing view is as useless and facile reading. Saying it belongs to the English literature class as a serious study, is a trolling joke. Same with Wimpy Kid, these are books that elementary school students read. If you haven't figured out this by now, sigh....

Shakespeare stands in for timeless books that are part of the cultural heritage of humanity, the so called western literary canon. Books that are remarcable by their mastery of language, originality, books that changed how we think, the stories we tell to each other etc.

.

I am glad you think Tales of Genji is trash (one of the books I suggested), it really shows your willingness to expand beyond white European authors.
Ah the old video game BS, you know some video games are based on classic literature. Many RPGs for example deal with ideas about racism, equity, moral ambiguity, etc. Or there are games based on strategy that require good critical thinking skills. They aren’t just all ‘let’s shoot some people.’ And again don’t twist my words to mean ‘we should not read books and only play video games.’ Not what I said or mean.

And Shakespeare wasn’t against my advice, don’t put words in my mouth. What I am saying is his work should be a small part of the pie and we read him so not sure why the advocacy for him.

Dickens was popular and low quality at the time (I still consider him low quality and trite). His serials were published in newspapers, and he was paid by the word. They were basically the 19th century soap opera (especially with the drama of EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS GETTING WORSE! Oh look, it looks like things might be getting better! A fresh crust of bread! JUST KIDDING THE BREAD IS MAGGOTS AND YOU HAVE DYSENTERY).

This is how we ended up with depressing tomes like Bleak House.

I am not sure it matters how it was perceived at the time or how it was published, it's more important how we see it today. Somehow it survived and stayed relevant for over a century, it didnt fall into oblivion.

Think about the phrase "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." it is instantly recognizable, why is that? Because it's part of our culture.

You are making a good case for reading books that you like. I dont see an issue with that, the canon is maybe 500-1000 books, one can't read them all unless this is your career, there are other things that take up your time so you'd have to be selective in some way. Also you might read some books outside the canon, because they are of interest you.
Some people made good points of what might be removed or added from the cannon, and what criteria we should use to do that.

The problem is that the woke come up with arguments that have nothing to do with the intrinsic literary value of the work. For example they'll say "men writing for men, pffft!", "how many women are in the canon?", as if we need to judge the canon by the ratio of penises to vaginas, or some other equally ridiculous metric.

You missed the point of the joke/comment, but I'm not here to argue.

Are you the mom who just wants her kid to read Shakespeare so her kid can get into college or the MIT PhD who has all the time in the world to be on her versus doing physics?

Not all of us are part of the western heritage. The majority of the city isn’t. You know your bigotry is showing with this post.

What you are awkwardly referring to as bigotry is called cultural relativism, i.e. there is no culture that is better then others, the product of white culture is meant to maintain its domination over other cultures etc. You are not even that original, it's all post-modernism, but since your cultural horizon ends at Kendi, I doubt you know what I'm talking about.

You are illustrating perfectly why people hate the woke mob cancel culture mentality. Someone is expressing an idea or an opinion and the response is not to consider its merits, but to be so hypersensitive and easily offended as to just cry racism, bigotry and white supremacy.
