No, he is not Asian (uncertain why that would even be relevant?). We are fine with the outcome, but would have liked to have some context as to why he was wait listed. Because MCPS made a big deal about the racial makeup of the magnet program is not comparable to the county population. They are trying to downgrade the importance of test scores so that they have more flexibility to make up the GT programs.

It is good to know that your child is not excluded purely because Asians were over-represented.

No one said they are geniuses. I think some parents want access to an enriched curriculum because they are indeed higher academic achievers. If a kid is reading 3 grade level ahead, let them be enriched wherever they are, be it at the home school or elsewhere.

We were at an HGC Open House last night. They reiterated what the letter said that the CogAT/SAS score was one factor that went into the admissions. InView scores, Map-R, 3rd Grade 1st marking period scores, teacher recommendations and peer group at school were some of the other factors. Unfortunately since the SAS score is the only numeric result that was sent out, people are comparing that. That probably explains why kids with 140+ scores in one metric did not get in.

Is he very mathematically advanced but reading is not? Reading weight heavy in this year's evaluation. Take a look at his reading level, is it a full year advanced? Is his Map-r over 97%? This is just my guess, we are on the same boat.

It seems everyone is reporting one test score. Last year, we were given three -- math, verbal, and some kind of logic score I believe. Anyone know why there is only one score being reported this year?

My main concern is that the other elementary schools are not offering adequate instruction to gifted kids. Administrators pay a lot of lip service to all they do, but really it involves differentiation, which is not in depth enough to add much value, and some stand alone math instruction. More formal programs need to be developed

Home school has a lot of kids under a lot of parental pressure to get in, complete with test prep.
