We've hated public education for a long time in this country. That's why the charter school movement is so well funded and why teachers are so micromanaged.

DCPS isn't going to make it safe, so time to divest and get vouchers to get something out of our tax money. Otherwise it's move to the'burbs, like what most of my neighborhood has done. Hopefully a DeVos program can re-invigorate our nations cities, because public schools are destroying them.

You know, you may not like the others vouchering into your new private school, OP.

Hahahahaha. All my racist redneck relatives are so looking forward to this, know those private school parents are going to hate their obnoxious challenged kids.

Nice twist. No one is asking for more money to DC. People against vouchers are against money being taken away from public schools and given to private schools and worse - - for profit private schools.

You seem to forget the obvious.

Money doesn't belong to achools. It belongs to taxpayers and to their kids -- so it's great news that they finally may have a say where they want to spend it.

I have to say I'm surprised that the Supreme Court hasn't yet ruled that the public school monopoly, especially in no-charter states like MD, is unconstitutional and ilegal.

Profit is a legitimate concern.

Where was the outrage last Congress when they passed a big bill to allow for-profit charter schools?

If well-done, vouchers will be a boom to the middle class.

Finally you can decide between public, charters, essentially free parochials and very affordable private schools.

No they don't. There are equitable service requirements to serve private school students under Title 1.

Formula allocations include the count of private school kids.

I'm starting to feel like most individuals commenting have not read all of ESEA and IDEA.

The House and Senate Republican voucher plans allow the state to decide if they want Title 1 or Part B funds to be distributed via a voucher system or the current formula. Blue states have nothing to worry about. Understand the concerns, but it's not stuctured to be a mandate. Please read the actual bills.

It is not selfish to want that for your child. That is why I said it is fine for you to want that (which I was careful to make clear, by the way, because I knew you would try to demonize and deflect from the argument).

But since you know the vouchers will not and are not intended to create safe schools in the city, and vouchers will not make the kids you don't like disappear, and that vouchers will take funds away from the school where those kids are, then you need to acknowledge that your attempt to claim that you want vouchers to make city schools safer and more academically challenging is bull pucky. You want a voucher to make private school more affordable for you, and you hope your child's current classmates won't get accepted to that school. Once you are out, you don't care a bit about how much worse off the schools you leave behind will become due to cut funding. You won't care that vouchers will bleed them of funding, making them less safe and less academically challenging for other kids because you won't be there.

NP here. I agree with the above. EVERYONE, even poor people, wants a safe school that challenges their kid academically. The only people who actually have a choice are people with money, even in a voucher system. Conversely, vouchers take money away from those local schools that need the money to educate those poor performing students; schools that need MORE money, not less.

it's not. but vouchers won't do that in DC. it's been proven here extensively. do you have a plan for how high-quality schools will be created to take vouchers IN DC?

^^^ funny. the only plan is to undermine public education as a right and privatize the whole thing. These are the "government school" nutjobs. I marvel at your restraint in counter argument.

I keep on asking them for DC-specific plans because I'm pretty sure they live in Indiana.
