Why not just "how proud of their daughter"? Who gives a damn about major, oh right, the "Indian American from a similar background."

She's not American she's an Indian citizen living in the us

Technically. The "Indian American" (or take another country like Dominican American) part is commonly used by those who while they are not American by birth nor did they get naturalized (didn't get US citizenship) but have lived in US most of their lives so will hypnanate because they associate with being American. As in this young woman's case, it was said she came to the US in 2006 and they say she is 20. So she came to US when she was 1 or 2 years old. Not knowing if she ever went back to live in India after she moved to US so they write Indian American.

it is relevant here because India had to take the lead with DR authorities vs US who was just monitoring (until recently) because she is an Indian citizen and not a US citizen. It mattered in this case. I do not have any opinion on whether India has a good diplomatic team (I see no reason why they wouldn't) but people were asking why it too so many days for the US to get involved and it is because the priority/first in line was India.

Through the TJ grapevine, a representative from the Indian embassy met the parents at the airport when they landed after they immediately booked the next flight there.

What parent would not do the same if they were in this situation?

In contrast, at that time, the response from the Americans’ embassy was “let’s just wait and see if she turns up.”

Sorry but this was an unacceptable and unprofessional response here, when clearly someone’s life is in great danger.

If they activated the embassy staff every time a young adult person wasn’t where they were expected to be after a few hours they would do nothing else. Lots of people go to these places to party and run off with friends and do unexpected things. She’s an adult woman.

I do not believe you understand the fact that this is an important family. However, I don’t expect you to understand because you are probably an american.

so that's why she didn't become an American citizen? Btw, we are all "important" people on here in case you didn't know

The family moved here in 2006 to take advantage of TJ being like a free private school. They have gamed the system under your tax dollars. They don't even live in Fairfax county.

We know a few in NYC like this. Had the children do all the "right" things, i.e. student government, a wild variety of internships that had nothing in common except prestige, do the right volunteering, test like crazy for the SHSAT schools.

It's just strange that nobody has seen them or at least seen the guy passed out/sleeping on the beach. From past experience staying at these types of resorts, staff gets to the beach before dawn to clean up sargassum and get the place ready for vacationers.

That’s not how it works. TJ is one of the governor’s schools. Fairfax county and any neighboring jurisdiction (Arlington, Loudoun, etc) can “buy in” which means buy a certain number of seats/enrollments for kids that live in their particular municipality. Alexandria City does not buy in, so kids there aren’t eligible. But Loudoun does buy in, and pays for their kids to be eligible. So their tax dollars do pay.

Loudoun has a large Indian population, it is not surprising that they lived there.

A poor young woman is probably dead. Have some decency when discussing this case.

It's been washed out to sea. Or eaten by a shark.

I read though there’s a protective barrier to the coral reef and the sharks preference for deeper waters. I still find it odd that her body hasn’t been found unless it’s been swept away.

No one actually knows if she went into the water, do they? Did cameras show she did? While it's likely she went in, or did someone make her go in, or did she....so many unknowns?

The story this morning on the news was that 8 total young adults were enjoying time on the beach at night, playing in the water and shore (her, her 5 girlfriends, and 2 guys they met there). The 5 girlfriends and 1 guy decided to leave the beach at around 5 AM and return to the hotel. She and the other guy stayed behind. They were both on the beach - not clear if in the water or sitting by where the water was breaking - when a huge wave came and took them out. He was able to get back out of the water and make it to shore. They were all extremely intoxicated. He fell asleep on the beach in the sand and camera footage has 'confirmed' this as he was seen leaving the beach at around 9:30 am. So far, she's not been seen on camera since early that morning.

His story is that they were wiped out by a wave, he got out, and he lost track of her. He didn't know if she got out and went home or was swept away. And it sounds like he was too drunk to think clearly or care.

As someone who grew up at the beach, it's not unrealistic for the body to not have appeared yet. It can take 3-5 days for a body to resurface in ideal water conditions, but if where she was washed out is very deep, it is possible the body never resurfaces. Same with if it is snagged or trapped on debris.

If camera captured her and the other seven people hanging out at the beach earlier that morning (4am hour), wouldn't there also be footage of her and the one guy hanging out at the beach? Why can't they rule out she did go in the water or she didn't at that time? Or did she just go in to the point to get her feet wet and continued walking further on the shore at which point the camera may not be able to see where and what she was doing. By ruling out one thing, they could focus search efforts elsewhere.

NP here: I don't think they have camera footage of the beach itself. They just have a camera on the paved path to the beach near the hotel.

The camera caught footage of the group heading to the beach late at night; the camera then caught footage of the young man returning to the hotel by himself at 930am (thus indicating he spent the night on the beach).

Were there other people on the beach (not just that guy) around that time who may have seen something (haven't read each news story to know)? It was probably too dark to see into the ocean tho.

Because he was *drunk* and could barely save himself. I think a number of people on this thread don't know, or don't remember, what it's like to be that drunk. Confusion, things spinning, disorientation, cognitive impairment...
