I love this show so much that I am pulling my husband in and starting (for me, again, for him, first time) from the beginning. We started yesterday and got through episode 4 so far. He loves it, too!

We have a teenage daughter with mild autism — no interest in being a doctor (and that’s great tbh) but I can also see some of her in Mel re her emotional reactions.

There are quite a few great Collins moments in these episodes, I don’t really understand the people who don’t like her. She’s funny. Remember the policeman who was going to hit on her and she just confidently cut him off? Then cut off Robby from asking about him? lol. Or how she figured out the train lady was from Nepal by showing her a map (and then the lady wound up congratulating her on her pregnancy)? I like Collins a lot, and I think she’s very sympathetic. Some of the other characters on the show are higher drama (like Langdon and Santos), but I don’t *like* them as much.

Collins and Langdon are/were Senior Residents, SloMo is a third year Resident, Mel and McKay are second year Residents, Santos is an intern, Whitaker is a fourth year med student and Javadi a third year med student.

I liked that scene so much too. Collins and McKay are both much older than their counterparts because they are coming from prior careers. But it makes sense that Collins is more competent and independent because she is two years further along.

Both looking forward to and dreading tonight.

NP here. I really like Collins. I loved her in the scene with the black mom and her teenage boy, where the mom was so thrilled to have a competent black doctor who finally listened. I think Collins and McKay are both senior residents, but Collins seems much more competent and independent.

People are so wound up with not liking a character they describe as bland and cold (despite her arguably having the most affectionate scenes in the season) that they need to pretend that only one person likes her. It's evident that there are multiple posters that like her, and multiple posters that don't. And the race war comments are weird, because for every post that goes too far with calling MAGA, there's a post insisting that anyone who does like her is trying to start a race war.

I have yet to see someone articulate a real reason why Collins is unlikable or a bad character. In some respects her arc is more subtle, but not in all. And if you don't know a lot about her, you haven't been paying attention, because they've told us a lot about her.

Aside from a couple of scenes with Dana and Robby, her biggest scenes are entirely alone, so she feels a bit removed from the main story.

I'm a fan of Collins and fascinated by this discussion because of my own experience working in a major trauma center ER when I was in college. I remember there was an attending doctor that I didn't like because he always seemed so cold. I mentioned this to a coworker, who'd been there for years. She said that I was completely wrong about him. As a young resident, he was exceptionally sensitive and it showed on his face, especially when the situation was grave. He'd been taken aside by his superiors and told to figure out how to mask his feelings because he was upsetting the patients and families.

I disagree that she's cold, though. She was really warm and lovely when delivering that baby.

PP. I don't think she's cold. But i don't think they've shown her having a lot of rapport with the other staff. This is understandable given her storyline, but it does make her feel a little peripheral to the rest of the cast. And for me, this is shaping up to be an ensemble show.

I'm actually surprised that I don't conflate them, and I was ER-obsessed back in the day. I'm about the same age as Carter/Robby, so that probably influences my feelings.

Robby seems like a very different character. To me, the essence of Carter was his youth and inexperience. My primary memory of Carter was not so much of a new doctor learning to practice medicine, but of a new doctor learning to emotionally reckon with the intense trauma and pain he witnessed every day.

Robby is more than just the opposite of that-- He's like the ideal of a mature and wise man/doctor. When he speaks to patients and especially to families, his affect, tone, and words are pitch perfect. He's straightforward but kind, knows how to gently lead them to face the truth while giving them time to absorb what's happening. He's equally great with the staff.

Anyone else keep conflating Dr. Robby with Carter from ER? I keep thinking he will mention his start in Chicago and dealing with Langdon's addiction would trigger his.

Just responding to myself and thinking about this more, the fact that she shows some of the potential flaws of Dr. Robby might be another possible reason some people here don’t like her. Like, maybe people just want Robby to be perfect, and don’t want him to have been, maybe, a bad, work-obsessed boyfriend, who maybe didn’t even want a family (idk). And there was certainly some tension in the first hours of the show where they weren’t really getting along. Maybe people aren’t liking her in part on Robby’s behalf, because they like him so much.

Some people still like the drug addicted doctor a lot though so 🤷‍♀️

I’m one of the ones who doesn’t like Dr. Collins but it has nothing to do with her making him look bad. I don’t think she makes him look bad at all.
