Yes. They are. This is the single biggest demographic. Keep in mind the US is not just DC or the east coast.

The issue is simple and isn't food deserts or any kind of marketing ploy.

Junk food tastes good. Sugar innately tastes good to humans. It's a treat.

When you are broke , can't afford a lot, aren't going on vacation, can't buy yourself or your kids new toys and clothes or electronics or even something as simple as a new home decor item or makeup, but you can buy food.

Because food is a need. So splurging on food gives you something. It's new, it's better than what you had, it makes you feel a little less hopeless about the situation. No one faults you for buying food and you don't feel guilty for it because food is a need not a want.

Some people buy $6 Starbuck drinks, other people buy the large pack of oreos. Same idea.

Poor doesn't mean dumb. They understand about basic nutrition. They ignore it bc they want one thing in their life not to be complete deprivation. So food it is.


It’s an opiate. Sugar is the safest drug to use when you’re poor. Everyone wants to be a hero to their kid. If it means more Oreos and potato chips, parents will oblige. It’s a win/win. Less work in the kitchen and happier kids

Frankly, the kids that are deprived of any junk food learn to enjoy it and eat more of it at an older age which is actually worse.

Kids have the metabolism for sugar , need the fat for hormones, and are young enough to burn junk food. Adults can’t

Lot of white people are on SNAP. Religious groups actually sell leftover monthly food stamp/SNAP benefits to those that need it. Arabs that run corner stores in the inner cities , Hasidic Jews, Mormons are notorious for it. It’s the 20th of the month and “Everything must go” before the 30th. Cash for stamps is a real thing .

If you were to put them on salads, they’d probably run away or raise hell. It’s hard for a non poor parent to ever understand it but my parents did this. Our house was chocked full of junk food and video games because we were latchkey kids with our parents at work all day and they wanted to make sure we stayed inside and not out in the streets .

Our mom was too exhausted to cook every evening but she did on the weekends
