true but police didn’t just watch. they weren’t told of the event. and didn’t show til called.

mcpd did nothing wrong. did their jobs.

at the same time, much credit to parasol patrol.

the only bad guys here are Proud Boys

Downtown Silver Spring is represented by Councilmember Kate Stewart, who has tweeted about it. My district councilmember, who does not represent downtown Silver Spring, has not tweeted about the apartment fire, and neither has councilmember Kristin Mink, who also does not represent downtown Silver Spring.

She posts regularly about things outside her district (and outside the county). That’s absolutely fine, and it’s also why the question about the SS fire isn’t unusual.

Y'all's obsession with one councilmember's tweets is just weird.

Montgomery County Police say that they dispersed a Proud Boys protest outside a drag queen story hour event at the Loyalty Bookstore in Downtown Silver Spring on Saturday afternoon.

The drag queen story hour with Charlemagne Chateau was held at the Loyalty Bookstore at 823 Ellsworth Dr. in the Downtown Silver Spring development. An MCPD spokesperson confirmed that officers responded to the area at approximately 1 p.m. following a confrontation between two groups.

Several pictures and videos posted to social media from this incident show masked Proud Boys holding signs outside the event.

Parasol Patrol, a group of volunteers who shield children and their families from the harassment of protesters, was present. NBC Washington reports that Parasol Patrol volunteers were kicked, their feet were stomped on, and one volunteer was punched in the face.

No arrests were made, according to police.

Parasol Patrol volunteers said that despite the MCPD report, the Proud Boys were not dispersed by police. “They did not disperse the PBs [Proud Boys],” volunteer John Zittrauer said in a comment on Facebook. “…I’m the guy with the bloody nose.”

“The incredible @parasolpatrol and the MoCo chapter of @DragStoryHour did wonders to not only push back and hold the safe space, but to keep cheering and singing joyfully in the face of hate speech and disgusting threats. Because of their efforts the children inside the store got to enjoy doing the Hokey Pokey, hearing beautiful books read aloud,” Loyalty Bookstore said in a tweet thread.

“Proud Boys showed up in Silver Spring and got violent today, trying to scare away families and children attending Drag Story Hour at Loyalty Books,” Councilmember Kristin Mink (D-District 5) said on Twitter. “But the community held a wall of 🌈 safety and support. The kids had a great time and were none the wiser. We will never back down.”

The Proud Boys left when the event ended, Mink said.

Great let's give MCPD more money to watch people get assaulted

Not FOP at all. I also haven’t lied once.

To which lie are you referring? That she called the commander? That’s not a lie, and she has admitted it wasn’t a good call. That should have ended this.

I have seen zero posters on this thread saying it was appropriate to call the 3D commander and multiple saying it wasn't (as I emphasized in another post above) even if they generally sympathize with Mink or think the FOP is being dishones. You know this yet you continue to create this straw man of people who think this was appropriate. You are not honest.

Not that poster but the FOP does not really represent all sworn officers. They may all pay dues, but that doesn't mean they even like the FOP.

Then they should speak up when the FOP claims to speak for them.

I hate the FOP but I actually don't blame officers for not speaking up. They need to be able to trust each other in that job. It would not be good to be labeled a rat in that job. I really feel for those officers that have to witness abusive behavior by their coworkers and feel forced to stay silent. You have to think about what that does to a person which really underscores the urgency of reform.

Right, but on the other hand, given the FOP's stated position on Councilmember Kristin Mink, it's hard for me not to question whether the MCPD officers did all they could yesterday when the Proud Boys showed up and Councilmember Kristin Mink was there. Which makes the whole thing even more pernicious. MCPD officers can't speak up against the FOP, while the FOP increases distrust of MCPD officers.

I have no idea but it's a story hour for kids. So I'm not sure wtf your problem would be with that unless you want the proud boys to win.

Let’s take a step back here, there is no need for anyone to engage in street battle with Proud Boys under any circumstances and declining to do so and allowing the police to handle it is not “want[ing] the proud boys to win.” It’s just adult behavior.

Let's focus on the topic at hand here. If Mink took her kids to a story hour I have no problem with that. Do you? By now,we would be aware if any kids were injured, and they weren't. You are trying to manufacture a scandal where there isn't one.
