Actually my kid is going there, this is the first I’ve heard of them giving a test at an ice cream social, and the whole thing sounds weird as hell.

They do use those tests to design classes but not in the way you think. They actually even out the scores so that every class's average is about the same. They use those scores, diversity, ES, neighborhood and other factors to attempt to create even classes. No prep needed.

No, no, no.

The only academic tracking done in any MS grade is for math and World History in 8th grade (sort of).

You get lucky, or unlucky, with both disruptive kids in classes and experienced teachers.
