There are a slew of laws in many countries dealing with topics ranging from online threats and harassment to online deception and fraud to antisemitism and other areas. How can he presume to just wave a banner of "free speech" and get around those laws? Will he just block access to Twitter from those countries? And what if people get around it by using a VPN? He's then still in violation of the law. He will have to make some decisions which would either kill Twitter for vast swaths of its audience, or he will have to continue to keep content moderation in place for Twitter, and will have to come up with some way to improve how that's done.

Call it cancelling or whatever you want but if Twitter just allows all manner of bull crap with no standards, then people can choose not to use it. Oh well.

I think you drastically overestimate how many mentally unstable cat ladies are out there, which is the only sizeable demographic that is freaking out about this.
The nerve of people on here to slander someone who is one of the biggest champions of the green economy by leading the mass production of electric vehicles and the production of more robust solar power is disgusting. I guess this is what you get when you do good deeds but have principles and aren’t some partisan hack who wants to censor the opposition huh?
Many people of sound mind are concerned about this deal …
When a divisive billionaire businessman acquires a platform with 215 million users, there are real reasons for concern, three BU experts say
https://www.bu.edu/articles/2022/elon-musk-buys-twitter-should-we-worry/
So why, exactly, do the stakes feel so big? The answer boils down to the outsized influence of Twitter on public discourse, and the uncertainty of what happens when the world's richest man — who revels in his unpredictability — gains singular control over that influence.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/26/tech/importance-of-musk-buying-twitter/index.html
Critics of Musk’s plan have expressed concerns that he would allow extremist content on the site, which Twitter and other social media companies struggle to fully eradicate. Musk acknowledged during the TED interview that content moderation is not a clear-cut issue.

KEY POINTS
Twitter’s decision to accept billionaire Elon Musk’s bid to buy the company and take it private prompted polarized reactions in Washington, D.C.
On the right, many lawmakers praised what they saw as a victory for free speech online.
But on the left, some lawmakers said the deal showed the need for higher taxes on the rich.

Of Course Elon Musk Wanted Twitter
The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla—and the richest person in the world—is obsessed with his version of free speech.
Dip into Musk’s history, though, and you’ll find that his commitment to free speech has been less than absolute. He might like to be able to say anything he wants, but he bristles when what others want to say goes against his own preferences. He will grace his fans with engagement, but he has little interest in critics. And he has not always shown himself to be someone who welcomes people speaking their mind, especially not at his own companies. Musk’s version of free speech, in practice, seems to be one in which only powerful people can say what they please and escape any negative consequences.

Let’s hope Twitter does better than Tesla …
KEY POINTS
• Tesla published its first-ever diversity report 16 Months ago
• In it, the company touted a "majority minority" U.S. workforce, though employees in leadership roles at a director level or higher were 83% men and 59% White.
April 13 (Reuters) - A federal judge said on Wednesday Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) was liable to a Black elevator operator who said the electric car company ignored racial abuse at the factory where he worked, but reduced a nearly $137 million jury award to $15 million.

State takes legal action over allegations of widespread discrimination and harassment of black staff at plant near San Francisco
The state of California is suing Tesla over allegations of operating a “racially segregated workplace” at its factory near San Francisco.
California’s department of fair employment and housing (DFEH) said it had filed a lawsuit alleging widespread discrimination and harassment of black employees following complaints from hundreds of Tesla workers at its main factory in Fremont.

It will be interesting to see what this does to twitter’s ad revenue.
Taylor Swift's twitter follower #'s: lost ~10k followers out of ~90Million. That's roughly 1/100th of 1% of her total followers. Though she seems to have been losing followers in the previous weeks. Don't follow her so I have no idea why.

Katy Perrys: lost ~5k followers out of 110Million. That's less than 1/200th of 1% of her total followers.
https://socialblade.com/twitter/user/katyperry
Like so many things, it depends on what one's definition of "significant numbers of followers" is. It's possible that Katy Perry will de-activate her Twitter account that's she's had for 13+ years and leave over that loss but the data seems to suggest that these mega stars will be able to handle losing 5 or 10k followers. And the people that unfollowed will likely be back anyway. Let's be honest here...
Katy Perry lost 200,000 followers, not 5,000.
https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/twitter-says-mass-deactivations-musk-news-organic-rcna26182
She still has 110 million followers. In the grand scheme of things, that’s a blip on the radar.
Do you also think it’s nothing that Marjorie Taylor Greene picked up 95k followers?
As for Perry, Swift, etc., it is a dramatic swing for two days. The level of deactivations and new account creation was high enough that it got Twitters attention and they felt it was worth analyzing. So you can keep trying to minimize it, but it is still a sign that a lot of people are very uneasy about the idea of participating in a platform run by Musk and giving him access to their personal data.
A bunch of republicans joined due to the news of Elon taking over and wanting free speech. It makes sense to me. I think Tucker Carlson even came back.

You truly know nothing about how business works. This entire musk saga has generated so much buzz. People who haven’t been interested in twitter ever are now checking out the platform. This is keeping things fresh. Twitter was in decline for quite a while now. If anything, this will boost Twitter up and keep it to stay more relevant.
Losing a few 100k bot accounts that never used the site to begin with don’t matter much in the long haul.
Twitter put out a statement that their analysis indicates they were not bot accounts, it was organic changes from real users deactivating their accounts.
If Twitter becoming another Parler is your idea of staying relevant, well, we will have to agree to disagree. But I certainly won’t be using it anymore if that’s where it goes.
Parler failed because the app platforms dropped them. Nasty behavior but expected from leftists.
False. Parler used bad technology and design, was repeatedly hacked with private user details accessed, and had a whole host of other major problems and red flags.

Celebrities often use bot farms to up their followers. They purchase them. I believe Musk is going to do away with that.
