Yep top private’s are worth it. Top private’s defined as 60% go to a top 30 univ or top 10 lac. If your kid do not make the cut and 60% of the class did, it’s your kid. To me if 25-30% are going Ivy and my kids not, it’s my kid too. I think it’s extremely hard to be one of the top 3-5 students but top half or third requires effort not brilliance. So for us it has been worth it.
I think this description is off. Plenty of kids from DC top private choose to go to SLACS ranked from 10 - 30 over non-ivy top 30 US news universities in that range. Examples they would choose Colby Hamilton or Colgate over USC, Carnegie Mellon, Michigan, NYU.

Would you please expand on this? DC is at a top private (9th grade) and is having a tough year getting adjusted, but I also recognize that she's not putting forth the effort I think it will take to succeed. Assuming she gets her act together and stays there to graduate, I'm curious as to what realistic expectations are, based on your theory. She'll never be in the top 25% but I'm hopeful for top 50 - 75%.

Yes, but none of the scholarships bring the cost down to UMD level. But that’s ok, we can swing it. Now to make a few return visits and decide.
DC also got merit money from UMD but doesn’t want to attend.
Specifically, what about JHU? Did they offer a merit package? It is high on DD's list. Much thanks.
PP back, no merit at Boston College either.
If you need merit to attend, JHU is a long shot, even for a very strong student.

PP here with the DC in question and I agree.
Although DC was admitted to WashU, BC, and Johns Hopkins, they didn’t offer any merit aid. No surprise there, only a few receive it at those schools. it was worth a try. But it means they are out.
The reach for DC was about money in addition to admissions.

That’s great! Why no reach schools?
Cannot attend without significant merit scholarship money. Reach schools do not award merit aid.
