In fact, I would say this is one of the very last "patriarchal" beliefs that many men will hold onto just because of the simple math of forming one family with two names coming in. Someone has to "lose"
I'm a pretty feminist guy and 100% hope that my future daughters can become CEOs, scientists or presidents without any unfair obstacles in their way. I consider those situations a win-win where individual girls can pursue their dreams and society overall benefits from their talents.
The last name situation is more of a win-lose scenario where someone may end up slightly disappointed in every situation except the extremes where two ultra conservative or ultra progressive people marry each other.
I agree with most of the first para but you lost me at someone has to "lose." They don't. You don't have to take one name or the other or all have the same name to be a family.

Society as large has decided that wives taking husbands' names is the most appropriate and practical decision because ~ 90% of wives do so
What a ridiculous conclusion. Slavery was legal few centuries ago... With your rationale we would be stuck in the Middle Ages.

Not previous poster but in my country no woman changes her name. I am from Spain. I think changing your last name when you marry is one of the most sexist things in the World. Why not adopting everyone the mother’s last name? Motherhood is far more reliable than fatherhood, if you know what I mean....
