Those people are 100% sexist creeps with whom I’d never want to be stuck in an elevator. I’m comfortable with their disapproval.
There are a lot of men that aren't 100% sexist creeps that have looked forward to this aspect of being married for a long time. In fact, I would say this is one of the very last "patriarchal" beliefs that many men will hold onto just because of the simple math of forming one family with two names coming in. Someone has to "lose"
I'm a pretty feminist guy and 100% hope that my future daughters can become CEOs, scientists or presidents without any unfair obstacles in their way. I consider those situations a win-win where individual girls can pursue their dreams and society overall benefits from their talents.
The last name situation is more of a win-lose scenario where someone may end up slightly disappointed in every situation except the extremes where two ultra conservative or ultra progressive people marry each other.

Ok, you and some others.
Society at large assigns it no such meaning.
Society as large has decided that wives taking husbands' names is the most appropriate and practical decision because ~ 90% of wives do so
