Difficulty of admission is not the same as quality, no matter how many naive people think so.
That's like saying price is not the same thing as value but the two are not unrelated.

The non-STEM kids getting into Berkeley from my DC’s OOS school are NOT top students. Literally can’t get in anywhere else in the top 50. One classmate was going to a regionally ranked school (not even USNWR national university) and got in off the waitlist. Think App State. Rejected at our state flagship. Test score is in the mid-1200s as shown on Naviance. It must be the essays getting these very average kids accepted. I think the ranking must be based on their old reputation.
Some of the non-STEM kids going to UChicago or Tufts from my kid's school are not great students either. They have Gpas of 3.6 but they are full pay and applying ED0 (Chicago only) or ED1. Many of these kids dont high rigor either.

Looking at US News, you'd think William & Mary and UC Merced are similar in caliber. Even though both high income AND Pell Grant students have a better chance of graduating from W&M and securing a better job. If you care about things like the preparation of incoming students (including SAT scores), average class size, student satisfaction and teaching quality (all things US News has eliminated or downgraded), then you should look elsewhere for ratings and rankings.
