UMichigan's operating budget is around $3 billion.
There are reports circulating among its departments that it will lose between $400-600 million.
But this should stop the bleed, no?
No, DEI is just a part of Trump's assault, unfortunately.
When NIH, NSF, etc. start reviewing grants again, UMichigan leads the country in obtaining "soft science" grants. Those are the ones the administration is going to cut the most, in favor of hard science grants. UMichigan is reliant those grants which will never materialize. Their graduate programs, even in Economics, are in red alert status right now. We are talking massive amount of layoffs and cuts.
How do you know this? Where does a prospective family find information like this? Are you connected to a faculty member?
If you email the Econ department chair, you'll be told about the cuts. This isn't secret. They are retrenching RIGHT NOW and are planning for further massive retrenchments. Undergrad will be less affected that grad.
You obviously have emailed them. Please post the response from the chair.

Michigan is my DC's number 1 school. Their major is in a hard science, but their secondary interest is psychology. We've always thought the strength of UM's psych department was another plus in case DC changed their mind once taking those hard science classes.
Their 2nd choice school is UGA for a psych major. DC had all but dismissed all other schools after visiting UM. Should we be rethinking?
I hate the idea that DC worked hard to get a shot at their dream school, gets in and then we are watching all these attacks target said school.
Should have voted and/or campaigned harder for Harris rather than the raging anti-intellectual sociopath who won.
Many schools, especially Michigan, went way too far with DEI. But this childish performative over-response is not the right answer. But the base is eating it up as he "sticks it to the libs."
God Bless America

DEI is pretty bad medicine

Jiminy Cricket! DEI is as dated as your language. It’s over. The rebuttal was the last gasp from someone trying to save their ass and job.
Check back in four years and let's compare who is still employed.
Probably all of us, actually.
This post didn't age well
NP. Did you bump this today because Michigan decisions will be out this afternoon?
