In June 2020, ANC 6B passed a resolution calling for reductions in MPD budget, the restoration and expansion of funding for violence interrupter programs, and the end to contracts between DC Public Schools and DC MPD.

The voucher program issues have been quite publicized for at least 4 years, don't see any mention of them. https://resolutions.anc.dc.gov/Documents.aspx

People need to wake up to not being as insulated from crime and disorder as historically has been the case in DC in Ward 3. And to politicians actively supporting and funding those changes. Your email or call or zooming in to a meeting may not have the impact it would in the past.

There have been many meetings with ANCs, Cheh, government officials, MPD re: these issues for years. Groups of concerned residents have met with Bowser. The WP has written many articles since the Sedgewick Garden series in 2019. Things have only gotten worse. There is so much money in play and so many layers of corruption. Frumin ran on a platform to expand affordable housing.

The poster who said more buildings will tip to become majority voucher until some point in the future when everyone will be moved out to reno and flip to condos may well be correct.

An important interim step would be to ask the ANCs to vote on resolutions supporting a moratorium on new vouchers until the city can develop reforms to this program. Frankly, the ANCs are stocked with many crazy leftists who are supportive of all these progressive concepts run amok. The ANCs need to be put on record for the voters to see.

Good idea.

very good idea. These poorly administered vouchers have pretty much made a humming, multi faceted urban community completely dysfunctional. So much for vibrant city living and all that.

Prior tenants are being replaced and encouraged to move on. Draw what conclusions you will. The neighborhood quality of life is impacted for those in SFH, too.

If middle class families move out, especially from W3, the prior tax engine, and CRE is a fraction of what it was previously in terms of revenue, where do the city funds come from? Those 2 things have never been in play before in DC, there were always workers downtown and Ward 3 was stable. Surely there is some plan, what is it?

The CP ANCs had DC Justice Lab speak at a meeting right after the vote on Pinto's crime bill. I'm not sure people grasp how divergent thought is on these programs/issues, including community members. Older folks and young both seem all in on socialism. Wanting basic order, decent schools, etc, what used to be seen as the primary function of government is now divisive. That gives cover to all with their hands in a very lucrative trough.

Uh, good luck with that. And to clarify, the shooting was in Forest Hills, not Cleveland Park. The looniest ANCs are in CP, can't imagine them signing on to such a resolution.

Putting ANC who have no power "on the record" is fairly ineffectual in actually advancing change re: the voucher program.

There is so much corruption that you start to feel like a sucker for not getting in on the action. I own many units in NW DC - I’ve never leased to section 8 bc I thought they didn’t pay and bc I wanted to avoid dealing with ghetto blacks. But if DC is paying a king’s ransom for the units directly to the landlord, I’ll go woke

It seems what needed is some data about the number of vouchers y/o/y mapped against the increase in crime. Ward 3 had the highest increase in crime last year if I'm not mistaken.

This isn't to say vouchers should be cancelled. It's to look at a way to administer the program so that it doesn't destabilize both buildings and neighborhoods.

Policies can make a difference. It certainly seems -- at least anecdotally -- that the instances of carjackings are down since the new laws were passed allowing police to detain those (including teens) accused of committing violent crimes until trial. Since then, I'm not hearing about daily carjackings. Now it's down to weekly or every other week. The point is that taking action on vouchers could help to stem the lack of safety along the Connecticut Avenue corridor.

One incident and now families in FH are allegedly traumatized, families in W7 and W8 have far more incidents and yet carry on.

For those of you threatening to move to Bethesda, just a heads up there are gangs there too. Crimes are rising in MoCo and across the VA border as well.

DC will carry on and be fine, it's tax base isn't going anywhere. DC has always been a transient town.

People move to FH and pay a premium to live there because it's known to be a safe place to live. With that removed, people in FH will move elsewhere because, frankly, they can.

What I am a bit baffled by, is the never ending pool of people wanting vouchers. I've heard of people coming from other states. How can she achieve her goal if more people are drawn here due to the way they implement it? A lot of cities still bus people back to where they are from or where they claim they have support, so they can be sent here for free. The tab for permanent supportive housing could last decades with no obligation to take any steps to become self supporting.

I was wondering about the numbers too. With DC’s documented failure to maintain public housing, seems like the real plan is to voucherize it all? Which, maybe this is an acceptable policy, but only for people who can follow the rules.

I live on Capitol Hill and yes, it does seem a bit dramatic for SFH owners in Cleveland Park to claim they are traumatized. However, when/if I have to move for various family/school reasons, the voucher situation has made me almost completely write off NW DC. There’s no way I’m moving my kid into an unsafe apartment building. It’s one thing to have your own home and crime on the block; quite another to have it in your apartment. We’ll be moving to Bethesda.
