But there are other MCPS IB programs, BCC, for one. I don’t suppose you have their median SAT? RMIB isn’t the only game in town.

A 27 ACT signals perhaps the child is not that naturally intelligent and that the GPA might be reflective of a less rigorous grading policies. Look I am not an admissions officer. I agree it means the kid is hard worker. But come on, that has to be why the 4.7 in-state kid didn’t get in. Right???!!


My daughter is the one with the learning disabilities. She’s taking three AP classes and all the other classes are honors classes. Her classes are rigorous. She is a hard worker and studies. The standardized test only test for how quickly can you retrieve information that you learned. Some people are more quickly able to retrieve information than others. If she has time to sit and think she can come up with the answer. But a timed test is much more difficult. By the way she is not my only child. I have a son who does not work hard at all that manages to get very high grades and is able to ace the standardize tests. My daughter is much more organized and a hard worker. My son is very disorganized and hardly works at all. They are very different people and a school would be lucky to have either one of them. Not just my quick thinking son


Didn’t your daughter get extended time on the ACT? This should even the playing field for your daughter.


Another parent here. It doesn't, really. It can help in some ways, but it really doesn't compensate, and it can lead to students getting sucked down a vortex of self-destruction in that time. It isn't that simple.

It does prioritize in-state and ALL colleges in the USA are run like businesses, which is why there is so much pressure to get into the state option and take the financial burden off parents

I don't really blame the poster either if she has other options. They want you to help their graduating students but they can't help your kid who was highly qualified for the in-state option. UMCP can run their business, you can run yours.

You got the 1500 as a median SAT for MoCo IB students from what school's website? From RM's? Obviously all MCPS students do not have a median score of 1500 on their SATs, so why does this applicant with 1440 get compared only to the 1500 median for some of the IB students? Do you work in UMCP admissions? And you're not hurting my feelings at all.

Maybe you need to re-read the entire thread... start from the very top... "IB diploma"... this student is an IB student, that's why I mentioned IB student scores.

I'm just a parent, and yes, my kid is in the IB program, and I am aware of some of their SAT scores through my kid.


Lemme get this straight: you quoted a 1500 SAT as median for the IB program, and it turns out you know "some SAT scores through your kid." That is not data. You seem to be intent on being unhelpful and you are making claims based on hearsay. Please get a hobby.

1500 SAT is considered low in MCPS IB, kids got 1500 would retake

Yes, that's about right when my kid graduated. Fair number of kids with perfect scores including mine.
